Hi Folks I have recently loaned an Ozark Resonator from a friend it's cheap but i just wanted to have a go on one....what i wanted to ask was what strings to re-string it with because quite frankly it sounds bloody awful lol. My friend recommended electric strings which I think it's strung with at present but I was thinking of putting a decent set of Acoustic strings on....any advice would be greatly appreciated Thanks in advance cheers Bob

My resonator has acoustic strings on it...and slightly heavier strings than I would use on a finger-picking guitar (13-56)

I put a set of Michael Messer Newtone Nationals on mine, as thick as you can get - sounds good: a nice 'raspy' sound in the bass.
Hope that helps

I think mine has D'addario EJ17s on at present - I did use Roto Grey electric strings for a long time (on all my slide instruments electric & acoustic) & I'm inclined to agree with your friend that they work well. One of the issues I've found with phosphor bronze on a reso is you end up with a lot of scratch
I have some D'addario Flat top 'resonator' gauge kicking about to try out at some point, but I haven't got around to putting them on yet.

Thanks i just can't get on with electric guitar strings i find them to thin and fiddly...i had 13's on my Acoustic but they were a tad hard to barre....down to 11's now and more comfortable

Agreed. I think mediums are probably right.

I'd just say the heavier the better in general but above 16s you're literally pushing it.

Having owned several high end resonators and given up on all of them, I would say you may be flogging a dead horse with the Ozark regardless of what strings you use.

I think you could be right there Malcolm it sounds dreadful to be honest i only borrowed it just to see if I could maybe get into it but it does nothing for me I have my old Norman Acoustic which I bought about 20 years ago new....for £250 and it's sounds lush
