Just heading off. Great line-up and looking forward to workshops and performances by Martin Simpson and Preston Reed and to hearing other guitarists I've not come across before, Paul Brett's done a great job putting it together. Also looking forward to a decent night's kip as leoroberts won't be snoring in the room next to me this year! I'll let you know how it went... Jonny

Have fun chaps, and please say Hi to Cathryn and Brian from me and from Viv; it's too long since we last met.

It was very enjoyable - something for everyone and a beautiful venue. The highlights for me were hearing and meeting Brian Willoughby and Cathryn Craig (Cathryn has a lovely voice and relaxed style) and Ben Smith and Jimmy Brewer: I met Mike Floorstand and of course caught up with Riverman which was good - played Mike Floorstand's Brook, a Clyst I think, and Richard's Fylde parlour, both striking and great to play. Preston Reed was fantastically impressive, very unassuming and humble when he spoke - his playing wasn't for everyone, but I enjoyed it. Martin Simpson played his PRS (still not back on his Sobells) and sung a lot about death, again, not for everyone, but I enjoyed his twiddly bits. Paul Brett is always entertaining and it's all down to him that the atmosphere is relaxed and friendly. He mentioned he may be able to get the John Etheridge, Gary Ryan and John Williams 6 Hands trio for next year - so I probably won't be going. Jonny

Indeed it was a fun weekend, glad you liked my Brook too Jonny (it's the Creedy model, a parlour even smaller than the Clyst I think). Unfortunately I didn't get any photos of Preston Reed or Martin Simpson who were headlining on the Saturday night, but did take some at the concert on Sunday afternoon. Here then are my entries for the Acoustic Soundboard Photographer Of The Year award: Brian Willoughby and Cathryn Craig, lovely songs perfectly sung by Cathryn with some nicely executed post-folk-rock acoustic guitar solos from Brian: Tim and Sandra, who I think run or ran the Birmingham Guitar Society and a Folk Club or possibly both, played a great arrangement of an Andy Cutting tune which is now on my to-learn list: Keith Newby, honed his craft - the A-Z of Rock delivered on solo acoustic guitar - in the pubs and clubs of Hull, very entertaining: Richard Knott, of this parish I believe, and a very, very clever craftsman of songs indeed: Ben Smith and Jimmy Brewer, Essex boys with a fine line in self-penned "Americana", really terrific listening: I can't end without a photo from my hotel, the reception of which was full of many weird and wonderful artefacts. I spent quite a while chatting to the receptionist who was keen to tell me all about most of the objects, all except for this one - in fact seemed to go to great lengths to avoid mentioning it at all:

Well hello Mike Floorstand, I didn't know there was another forum member there! Thanks for the kind words about my songs. As ever, I very much enjoyed the weekend. Not all the music was to my taste, but the atmosphere is so friendly and intimate that that hardly seems to matter. And of course the venue is sensational. I thought Ben Smith and Jimmy Brewer were the absolute stars of the event. I first met Ben when he played the festival a few years ago, and his playing impressed me mightily then. He and Jimmy are a natural pairing, their harmony singing suggesting that they've been making music together far longer than two years, and Jimmy seemed well up to the challenge of keeping up with Ben, playing wise. I don't think their videos, or indeed the CD I bought, quite do justice to the energy they generate live, especially when they take turns to solo. Very highly recommended, if you get chance to see them in person.
