We were over in Illinois visiting our daughter and her family last month. Whilst over there despite it being a contender for bearing the worse name for a music store in the entire world, I naturally paid my usual visit. I was disappointed to find that they appear to have ceased to stock Martins and Guilds. The two guitar racks almost entirely comprised Breedloves and Washburns.
Now then, I have a bit of a soft spot for Breedloves, no doubt due to the fact that I just happened to be passing their factory in Oregon a few years back and popped in for a look round. I like the kind of country and Americana music played by some of their signature artists too. I bought a Breedlove over there a few years back (hence my username) but thanks to getting involved with you scoundrels, my horizons were stretched and I soon moved onward and upward to Lowdens. I sold the Breedlove to a friend last year (and of course regretted it). The thing is, imho, their top models are not in the same league as many less expensive ones from other stables. It might be said they sacrifice some function for form - you're playing for extra bling and some models are coated with enough lacquer to cover a small yacht. But for all that I like them! They're well built, stable and effortless to play.
Anyway, I'm in the store with Mrs breedlover. She was all for staying in the car but it was about 88°F and she would have melted. This turned out to be a very good thing. She was looking at the guitars and suddenly declared "Wow! This is beautiful". It's the Breedlove Pursuit Exotic Concert Koa CE: solid Koa top, back and sides. So I had a play. It really felt lovely in my hands and the finish on the quite slim neck facilitated very easy moving up and down the fretboard. Plugged it in. Hmm not too keen on that rather quacky piezo mic but there are ways round that. Despite the fact that I liked it and the price was good, I would honestly have walked away. But Mrs b insisted I buy it. Really! So the deal was done. As well as the gig bag included in the price they threw in a pre-used solid case for getting it home.
AerLingus looked after it extremely well and it's settled in here nicely. It's still pretty quiet yet (yet in a way it's a nice contrast to the very declamatory - yet gorgeous of course - Lowdens!) I'm getting an acceptable electric sound by running it through a Boss AD-2 and it's ideal and free of hassle for the open mics.
