Whilst out with the dogs the other day I got into conversation with a fellow dog walker who said he'd made a papier-mâché guitar and he'd posted the result on YouTube here's the link

There have been a number of builders who have made guitars with the back and sides of 'paper mache', or usually more accurately cardboard or poster board. A friend of mine, one of the best classical makers in the USA, David la Plante made one a few years back from poster board which was very successful, of coarse when the poster board is coated in layers of shellac it becomes very stiff. www.guitarsbydavidlaplante.com/cardboard%20guitar.htmThe whole idea of making paper mache guitars comes from the guitar maker that all of you at HB8 heard me wittering on about, the great Antonio de Torres who in the middle of the 19th century built one, FE14, (you all remember what that means don't you), using cardboard or paper mache for the back and sides. The reason he made it was to demonstrate that the material used for the B&S made only a small contribution in colouring the voice of the instrument and that the critical part was he choice of top wood. The guitar he made can still be seen in the Musea da Musica in Barcelona, I was very privileged in being allowed to examine it there.
