Sometimes I think I'm making no progress at all in my efforts to learn guitar, so in an effort to convince myself otherwise, I posted a list of the ten things I learned (or ought to have learned) this year. And yes, they are all about guitar playing, and some of them might even be relevant to non-classical players! I also wish everyone a Happy Thanksgiving (otherwise known as turkey day over here), but who needs an excuse to eat turkey, cranberry orange sauce and stuffing? Best Julie

Good advice there Julie. The one's that resonate most with me are:
3.& 4. Playing super slowly really helps with EVERYTHING
6. If you can't seem to 'get' the LH fingering, check the RH!
9. Recording yourself is really really really useful.
I'd add: only play songs that you really really like.

I'd add: only play songs that you really really like. Iain I agree with this one (well, I agree with all of them) but this year I lost so much interest when I was learning song after song for various gigs that I hadn't really any desire to play. It took a concerted effort between me and my thumb-pick to set things right!

It takes me a lot longer than one year to learn ten things! Keith

Wow - it's impressive to be able to analyse what you are doing and what you need so clearly Julie. I congratulate you! I'm too shambolic to even make a start on such a list. I'll just stick with my rule number 1 .... if I don't enjoy it then stop and do something else that I do enjoy. Sheer laziness I know!!! I'll go along with "playing super slow" too - not for memorisation or error correction ... just I can't play fast. Happy thanksgiving to you to Julie, though as I work in a business that sells processed meat including a lot of turkey, it takes a bit of a shine off enjoying it on a plate. Mark

Hi Everyone - thanks for reading - it's easy to see why classical guitar isn't a sport pursued by millions! Though it does appeal to those of us who like a challenge I think if i could sing I would never have gone down this rabbit hole, but having started, it's become an obsession. Turkey day tomorrow! (though we are having roast beef on Friday- us Brits like to be different ) Julie

Number 10. Painful but very effective.
