Hi,
I find I play my Auden 12-er more and more on 80% of songs I strum as I find the fuller sound very rewarding; not all but many. The Auden, which I really love and I've tried a lot, is a less brash sound than nearly all other 12-ers I've tried, plus light strings, makes it even more pleasant (to me). But I still fingerstyle 80% of my 6 string stuff. Therefore if I'm going somewhere where I might play, its hard to choose what to take and don't want to lug both around.
Has anyone got/tried an acoustic dual neck guitar i.e. a 6 and 12 string? Are they playable (technically)? Do you just end up with a not very good 6 and 12 string? There seem to be very few around (quite a lot of electrics but not acoustics), which may well answer my question!
Any of our luthiers built one??
Interested in your observations.

This might fit the bill? Of course you'll need to learn to play a mando too!

I've never played one, John. Might be worth contacting Paul Brett ( guitbrett) - he owns/owned several. They can be perfectly playable and functional instruments if made well. But probably not cheap! Much better taking two guitars though - you can get double gigbags if that would help. Unless, of course, one of our resident loofahs is up for a challenge.......? Keith

Keith Thanks Keith. Hadn't thought of that as I always use hardcases which are cumbersome just for an evening. I've had a quick look for double gig bags on ebay/amazon and only ones I can find are for an acoustic and one of those electric thingies. I'll ring a couple of stores and see.
Thanks for the good suggestion. (Still like to hear from anyone got/playing a double neck).
Regards
John

Wouldn't it be cheaper/easier to employ a sherpa for your two cases Plus you may need one to carry the custom case a double neck would be in. Apart from harp guitars I've only ever made one double neck and that was a lap slide. Structurally dealing with the tension from 18 strings would be interesting and my suspicion is that the result would be a compromise purely acoustically - plugged in would be a different matter. Plus they aren't the easiest of things to balance and play. Ovation made some but their structural stability record isn't good and a lot have unplayable actions.
