I don't want anything fancy, just a basic package to import wavs and tart them up a bit. I was going to download Audacity but it insisted on adding "My Quick Converter" which comes with an outrageous list of demands.

I've seen about, but not tried, ocenaudio. Which is supposed to be easy to use and fast. I had seen it was good for quickly importing long audio files for processing and was thinking of trying it. It is also able to apply and tweak fx in realtime, rather than the destructive application of fx that most free audio editing software does. It also supports VST. But, like nearly all free Audio Editing Software it does not have multi-track capability. A Review HereBest free audio editing software per Tech Radar can be found here.Mark

Many thanks Mark. On the basis that it's "easier to master" I've downloaded Ocenaudio. Now then, must be patient, must be patient, must be patient, must be patient, must be patient, must be patient.....

Ah...I just spotted the bit about not having multi-track capability I should have mentioned that I need something I can mix with. I'll keep looking.

Reaper - not exactly free, but the trial version is. Not that easy to get to grips with though.

I used to use Kristal Audio Engine for home recordings around ten years or so back. It did everything you're asking for. I don't think it's supported anymore, but you can still find the 2009 version kicking around. I always thought it was pleasingly idiot proof compared to most other DAWs.

Audacity for me. I don't remember any problematic downloading demands, but then (as now) I was probably drunk

Good call. I went with Presonus Studio One when I was doing trials of the various options to mix my bluegrass album. I found it the most intuitive out of Pro Tools and Cubase, which were the others I tried. Pro Tools does have a light free version too. www.avid.com/pro-tools-first

My son is a product tester for Presonus Studio One and produces online tutorials for them. This sounds daft but I wasn't keen to install Studio One as I didn't want to be pestering him for help all the time. And do you know what? It is daft, in fact it's plain stupid. I have now installed the Prime free edition and am compiling a list of questions for him Fair do's to him, he says he's only too happy to help. Thanks for your time folks (which I think I've somewhat wasted!)

I use Studio One, and like it, but it is a full-featured DAW and has a learning curve, a reasonably steep one. So does Reaper, which is popular in amateur recording circles. All of the full DAWs are a bit tricky to use at the beginning. Audacity is the easiest-to-use multitrack audio editor I know of. You won't find anything simpler in audio software, and if you choose something more obscure there won't be a mass of supporters in forums and the like to answer questions. You only have to download the extra add-on once: it is because of a licensing issue. Audacity is full open source and does not pay royalties to include patented software within itself. The extra program provides the WAV to MP3 capacity which is not built into Audacity. You could start recording without it, but you won't be able to export your finished tracks as MP3s. Edit: Download Audacity directly from the open source site to avoid unwanted extras packaged with it: www.audacityteam.org/download/windows/You can avoid downloading an extra program to go with Audacity altogether if you can find and download 'LAME Mp3 encoder': this is just a file which you place somewhere on your computer. The first time you convert to MP3, Audacity will ask you where it is. Kym

Thanks for your time folks (which I think I've somewhat wasted!) I have to be honest, if I didn't already own Logic Pro X and Cubase, I'd be jumping on the Studio One ship. Prime is free and (to my mind) is equal to Cubase LE or Elements. It's installed on my PCs. May I ask where I can find your son's tutorials?

I’ve also been interested in Studio one but I bought Logic years ago and the developments and new updates now always seem to be free!
