I have come to learn (luckily not by personal experience) that in the banjo world there are a whole heap of scammers on Ebay and similar sites, just waiting for you to part with your money for what you think is that dream buy.
Photos of instruments that have been plucked from other classifieds and false claims of high end instruments and the likes, you buy it and never see your purchase. That kind of thing.
Is it as rife with guitars?
I'm glad that i have places like this to ask advice, as i would probably be quite an easy catch for a scammer, thats if i ever bought off of ebay. Stories like this really put me off, but obviously it's not always the case.
Have you ever been had by a scammer, or are they easy to spot?
Thanks.
Calv.

I do believe they are rife. The amount of fake Martins that I see on ebay is unbelievable.
I haven't ever been scammed, but I am a bit of a Martin geek and can spot when something isn't right pretty quickly. It seems plenty of people are fooled though.

Are there any obvious pointers to look out for with Martins Lynn? I'm not sure a novice like me would know.

Here's one that came through as I was reading this.
" I am Mr.Paul and would like to order(Guitar) and what would be the price for each unit so that i can Quote you with the Quantity i want to order..Also what type of payment do you accept,Thank you and reply ASAP"
I rarely look at ebay so can't be much help with that, I mostly see scammers buying not selling.

There are so many little things... wrong rosette for model, wrong binding, lack of a volute or a volute on models that shouldn't have one, fretboard dots ( though sometimes people do add after-market inlay, but this is usually upfront on the description), etc. Two big giveaways for a non-Martin are having a serial # printed on the label, all serial numbers are burned into the neck block. The other one is the shape of the bridge, I have seen at least 5 Vintage V300's trying to be passed off as Martins.

I once got scammed buying a guitar advertised on Gumtree in the UK (I'm in Australia). I was fairly new to internet guitar purchasing and so was a little gullible but what really amazed me was how difficult it was to get any recourse - police, banks involved in the money transfer, Gumtree, federal govt fraud organisations etc. couldn't help. Privacy laws prevented me from getting my money back even though I had bank details, name of a/c, supposed address, email address, and mobile and residential phone numbers. I'd spoken with the "seller" several times and he seemed to know guitars but once I had sent the money all communication from him stopped... Curtis Everden I hope you choke on the cash you scammed from me....
Anyways, I think/hope I'm a little wiser now...

Ok Trevor so what is it I'm doing wrong ... maybe I should be saying "...would like to order (Somogyi) and..."
