Hi Guys i'm currently studying the Matteo Carcassi method, been about Two months and was doing well. I then came across 'Carcassi Prelude Opus 59', i have to play an arpeggio which i now understanded as a picked 'broken' chord, i was ok until i encountered the fourth bar! I find D minor a struggle anyway, but this is made harder because you have to play the D note with the pinky finger instead of the usual ring finger, and if thats not hard enough, i then have to stretch for a fourth note while holding the awkward 'new' D minor! I'm very focused and pracitce at least half an hour EVERY day without fail, but this has really got me, its crippling and painful to say the least! my fingers are very tough at the tips through playing, but they are becoming very sore and i thought i was well past that stage. I have an hour lesson every fortnight but its not good news for me or my teacher at this rate, no progression past this fourth bar, totally stuck sore and frustrated! I keep going over it and over it but the muscle memory is not there

Hm. As an exercise you could maybe try playing E (major) and Aminor chord in the same way as the D minor with the same fingers. Work at changing between all three and see if that helps the poor old pinky to get a grip on this new function. Once it has, the other stretch can then be worked on from a more solid and confident starting point. Ignore me if I'm talking rubbish! Good luck. Keith

Hi, volante5767. It might* be worth looking at some of the posts by jonnymosco in the Tips and Techniques section...I know there’s a post about finger stretching exercises that might help... *will

You have my sympathy but this is why I ditched classical guitar many years ago. Those chords hurt!

Hi volante5767, I've had a look at Op. 59 and put an image up on my blog of the first two lines which shows the fingering. I wouldn't worry too much about it being by Carcassi and being a classical piece, after all the first four bars comprise the familiar chords: C | Am Am/C | Dm Dm/F | G7 | which are common in pop songs and folk. The chord on the fourth bar is G7 and if you follow the fingering on the image, the previous bar should be manageable too. I can see there being an issue with the independence and strength of the 3rd and 4th fingers, but over time and exercising them using a chromatic scale for example (featured on my blog here) they will eventually finger those chords with minimum stress and tension. Good luck. Jonny
