Hi Folks. I'm looking to buy another guitar but am looking to spend only around £300, maybe a bit more. The reason is that we've bought a static down West Wales and I want to keep a guitar down there but really wouldn't feel right leaving my Fylde or my lovely Milsom (Hi Francis ) down there. I've been looking at the GG which has had excellent reviews but am a bit concerned that the only spec i've seen stating nut width said 42.5 mm. Have any of you got one or have you tried one so that you could comment on the apparent narrowness of the fingerboard ? Maybe the string spacing is good. I realise the neck shape will also be different from my current guitars but spending only a relatively small amount I can't really be too picky. Also, I know it's always best to try a guitar before buying but the amount i'd spend getting around to try guitars in that price range would be a large part of the budget. All advice greatly appreciated even if it's suggestions of other guitars. My current ones are triple 0's essentially, short scale (629 - the GG is 642) with 45 mm nut width. John

Hi John, 42.5mm seems very narrow indeed, I like a wide fingerboard and a chunky neck. I recently bought a recording King 000 to bring on holiday for that sort of money, and I'm very pleased with it. Blueridge might be another option!

I have a one of these (Vintage V880N) which is up for sale. Complete with padded case and guitar stand. I'll be selling a large amount of my electrics and acoustics in the next few weeks as I'd like to invest in a custom build or another Brook. In Swansea on Wednesday for the Uni open day. Dale

Hi John - the nut width you saw looks wrong!
I have a VE2000GG and also one of the now discontinued all mahogany models (V2000MGG).
Nut width 46mm on both. Width of 37.5mm 1st to 6th string at nut on both. String spacing 1st to 6th at bridge 55mm. Neck depth fret 1 = 24mm, at fret 7 = 24mm Weight 4.75lb
Upper Bout 283mm, Waist 205mm, Lower bout 402mm. Body depth tail 119mm, Body depth at neck join 99mm. An unusual body shape with a narrow waist and wide lower bout - some people find that an issue but I don't and I usually like parlour size. I think that the pinched waist benefits the sound.
My experience with Vintage as a brand is if you can get one from somewhere that includes a decent set up it's well worth it - factory set up errs very much on the side of safety!
Hope that helps.

I have a hog top V2000MGG and its a great gigging guitar. Gigged with it last night in fact. As Marks says above, best to get it set up professionally. On mine the neck was wide but the string spacing on the nut was narrow so I had a wider nut fitted. They are very good value.

Thanks for the info Dale. Enjoy your day in Swansea.
Now that's what I call detail Mark. I looked in a lot of places and read reviews and the only one that referenced nut width said 42.5. It doesn't even look right just looking at the guitar. And doesn't make any sense for any kind of fingerpicking use. The body measurements are different from my current guitars albeit not a great deal (except the waist). The neck depth is an extra 3 mm but, as I said, if i'm spending a modest amount I can't expect everything to be just as i'd like.
A great help and i'll let you know what I decide to do.
John

Just saw your post Iain. Much appreciated. If I get one i'll bear in mind your point about the string spacing. Also the set up.

Additional in regard to the above John:-
String spacing at Nut : 1st to 6th string 37mm on both the VE2000GG and the V2000MGG. String Spacing at Bridge : 1st to 6th string 55mm on both the VE2000GG and the V2000MGG.
I'd seen comments about the neck being chunky, but I was surprised that it didn't bother me despite my relatively small hands / shorter fingers.
I'd second Iain's comments about the hog top V2000MGG being "great" and would say the same about the VE2000GG. The hog top version is now discontinued by the way, which baffled me!

Mark More good info Mark. My hands are fairly small so your thoughts in that regard are extremely relevant. As regards woods, I tended toward the idea of all mahogany simply to have a different sound. But then I listened to demos on youtube and was very impressed with the sound of the cedar topped version (unsurprising really as my Fylde is cedar/sapele). So, i'm tending toward the 2000GG at the moment if I do buy one of these. I'm trying my best not to jump in quickly which is what I tend to do. 'Patient' is not my middle name. As regards the string spacing Iain i'll bear your points in mind if I do buy one of these guitars. John

40mm is good string spacing at the nut, and if I may be so bold, I would also recommend 60mm at the saddle. I like chunky necks and wide fingerboards and have several guitars with these specs and when other people play them they tend to love them. I don't know how we ever got to the stage where most guitars have 1 11/16 nuts but I sense there may be a backlash coming if people would only experiment a little.

I did buy a VE2000GG afterwards. Got it on Wednesday. Initial thoughts. Excellent all round. Great quality for the money (exactly £300 as I said in the thread starter post). Nut width IS 46mm as others have said. A mm wider than the Fylde and Milsom but the extra mm is below the 1st string (presumably part of GG's spec or maybe the same as his Rob Armstrong) so string spacing is very similar. With the extra mm if you pull off the 1st string it doesn't ride over the edge of the fretboard. Incidentally Mark, I mentioned a nut width of 42.5. I just looked at Gordon's site and that's where I found the reference to it. Bit strange that. As I say, early days so far but, at the moment I think i've made a very wise choice aided greatly by all the advice provided by you good people. John
