A friend has leant me an OM to use for a little while- standard 25.5” scale. Currently has 12s on which I am not finding works for low tunings like CGCGCD and CGCFCD. I was thinking of using so called “bluegrass “ gauge strings, the ones with light tops and heavy bottoms. What does everyone else use? I want to be able to go from standard to low tunings.
And on on the subject of strings, I see strings direct are offering a set of 12 to 13 coated strings manufactured by PRS. Anyone tried these?

D'Addario EJ24's work well for me for those tunings and standard - 13, 17, 24, 32, 42, 56.

D'Addario EJ24's work well for me for those tunings and standard - 13, 17, 24, 32, 42, 56. Agree: I use these for missionary tuning on a long scale (650 mm), too. I find the not-12 gauges provide good feel and intonation, even with big fret stretches. <Arnold Schwarzenegger voice> You should stop using those girly-man strings </Arnold Schwarzenegger voice> Kym

I use 13s - standard Newtone set. I don’t really see the advantage with specialist strings although I guess an unwound 3 rd might break less often.
Good to see you playing a guitar again!

Newtone 13's Low Tension, they also do a DADGAD set which works well for other Open Tunings.

I use the same sort of strings regardless of tuning. Mainly because I don't notice any difference that bothers me if I tune down with my usual strings. This could say more about me than it does about the strings suitability. Whenever I have tried strings "designed" for alternate tunings I've found I prefer the usual strings. Mark

I've always just used 12s for everything - the slight buzz and lowered tension is part of the 'detuned' sound for me! But I suppose for a more balanced feel you could buy a set of 13s and replace the 3rd and 2nd with ones from a 12 set

Silly me! Yeh, I've written 4 arrangements this week- two of them accompaniments for songs- The Blacksmith and Star of County Down; then a couple of slip jigs- Rocky Road to Dublin and Hardiman the Fiddler. Early days of getting back to guitar, though I'm enjoying it. Thanks everyone for the suggestions. I have ordered some bluegrass gauge strings from newtone just to see how I get on. oustudent are those the Heritage strings that you use? Robbie

Hi Robbie- like many others I am happy that you are back playing.Like you I have used bluegrass sets for cgcgcd etc etc- all of them seem to work fine but theres one caveat and that is that youre pretty much stuck in that tuning and I would hesitate to take them up to concert tuning on say an OM.I have always found it easier to use two separate guitars /or try 54-12 which works on pretty much any tuning .Hope this helps.

Look forward to a video soon with the OM then? Phil

I'm stuffed if I do! I really cannot record it with the current strings as the bottom string is just too loose. In fact, another friend has leant me a cheep and cheerful Yamaha classical- 48mm nut width and cutaway, on which these new arrangements work very well. Will be interesting to compare. Robbie

As others have said Robbie, I'm glad to hear that you're back playing the guitar and arranging guitar pieces. Looking forward to the next CD! Dale
