Ok, hive mind. I need some advice.
I'm in London for a couple of days and I went to Ivor Mairants. Probably a mistake.
I tried one of the new Atkin pre aged guitars. One based on a 1947 Gibson LG I think. It was utterly fab. I'm not a great fan of pre aged new guitars but this one just worked.
I can afford it but it is over 2 and a half grand. For that money I could get a real 1947 LG and have quite a lot of change. But it doesn't come with the potential problems of a real vintage guitar.
I really don't know whether to go back and try it again. That may lead to purchase.
What does the team think?

Did you try out the Fylde that they have for sale?

PS In answer your question, I would buy secondhand there are bargains to be had. Your £2,500.00 Atkin will be worth £1250.00 next week if you took it home.

however... the second hand one may not be quite like the 'one' I say if you can afford it and it feels right for you then go for it, have a good few years of value out of it and then if you did ever decide to move it on the resale is less of an issue.

oustudent I know new guitars are poor in resale value and your advice is good. But these are new in the Atkin range. It may be ages before any appear second hand. I'm getting old. I don't even buy green bananas these days. I also don't believe that guitars are for selling. Only buying! But I am attracted by your point of view and I may well resist the temptation. Hard though it is.

Btw I haven't tried the Fylde. I may well do that. What model is it?

If you’ve played it, and others, and it’s your preferred guitar then you’ll probably regret NOT buying it.
As you say, it’s new so shouldn’t entail the possible risks of a second hand purchase. And you can, of course, always leave it to your N* favourite fat, bald scouser in your will...
*(Where N is an integer of indeterminate quantity to the writer as s/he is unaware of quite how many fat, bald scousers may be of your acquaintance and where s/he may figure in that list)

If it says "Take me home" when you play it, then you probably have no option. Looks fab. Narrow nut though... The Fylde Falstaff is a very good price from a shop, recent model but and comes with a bit of pre-aging according to the description. Pickup too.... Buy them both? Keith

Veni.Vidi.I didn't Vici. But I'm only in Soho Square. I could go back. I didn't try the Fylde. On balance I think I might not buy it sweet though the little Beastie is.
I shall probably regret it as you say, Keith. But it's an awful lot of money. Funnily, I didn't find the neck particularly narrow. It's a really slim profile though. Maybe that makes a difference.
I think I may start searching for a second hand guitar that grabs me now. Strange. I haven't suffered GAS since buying the Avalon from Gavdav. Seems I was only in remission.

The Fylde looks a good price to me - bet someone could wager a good cash price...
Gas never completely goes, it just ebbs and flows!

Keith I was about to mention that, the Atkin OM std is 43mm nut. Feels OK in the hands at first but if you are used to a wider nut you could soon fall out of love with it.
