Hello everybody, I recently uploaded some videos filmed at the Taran Guitars workshop in Scotland last month. I've been a fan of Rory Dowling's work for years now and when I caught up with him at this years Holy Grail Guitar Show he had some absolutely stellar instruments with him. He asked if I'd consider making some demo videos and that turned into all this! You can find a podcast on my website where he goes into more detail about the history and inspiration behind Taran Guitars right here but first off here's an introductory video for those of you who are unfamiliar with Rory's work. And here are the guitars, first up is a Tirga Beag model (a big OM essentially) in Malaysian Blackwood and Swiss Moon Spruce with a wenge neck. It's a very powerful guitar indeed but with great capacity for nuance and delicacy too. Here's Rory's OO "The Taran" in Madagascar Rosewood and Swiss moon spruce. It's an extremely lively guitar, so much so that we decided to string it with non-coated D'Addarios rather than Elixirs to pull out all the raw snap and bite of the instrument. Finally here's another The Taran model but this time it's voiced as a super-responsive fingerstyle guitar in flamed maple and Swiss moon spruce. This is a guitar after my own heart. It was made for exhibition at the Holy Grail Show this year and it's absolutely wonderful. There will be more videos in this new "Luthier Stories" series on my YouTube channel in the not too distant future. I hope you enjoy this videos and look forward to sharing more with you. All the best MDW

An interesting and informative video on the making of a Taran and the other videos showed clearly lovely guitars and lovely playing too. I'd never had a Taran in my hands until last weekend when dropping Dave's "An Fea Caol" off at Martin's on the next leg of it's road trip. It needed just a few delicate notes to realise how good that Taran was. So that was two guitars I would have liked to smuggle away with me, but I couldn't think of a way of getting away with it! Mark

Great videos, Michael. What comes through as much as the skill and expertise involved is just what a bloody nice bloke taranguitars is. I was quite shocked not to see you both with the obligatory cup of tea hovering somewhere

Nice videos and playing man! I visited Rory's workshop last year, its awesome and I can confirm Rory is a top bloke. He has made some weird and wonderful stuff over the years too. I remember chatting to him about a crazy split headstock five string. www.taranguitars.co.uk/chris-amer/
