I paid a visit to Dawsons in Leeds on Monday August 6th and tried an utterly fantastic Avalon spruce and rosewood, cutaway acoustic - heavily discounted. If I were employed, it would have been coming home with with me. Here it is with its five mates:

I know of the brand but never given them much thought, they seem to be in the Lowden, higher end Taylor bracket.
I am not in the market but I may take a look next time I am in Dawsons.

They are great guitars but i’d never buy one new as they don’t hold their price well and you can pick them up for good prices second hand.

I bought mine second hand from this very forum and I love it! They sure are beautiful guitars, and much more Lowden than Taylor, I promise you, oustudent. But that would be undermining the guitars themselves. They are very much Avalons. I've played several and never found a dodgy one.

I was thinking price bracket to Lowden and Taylor and does any guitar hold their price in today's market? We have discussed this before, the secondhand market is saturated and there are bargains to be had. The current business model of music retailing does not stack up for me, I often wonder how they make any profit.

You can get some mad bargains if you look for small high end not well known brands. A pal of mine got an acoustic whose new price was 9,000 for 1,200 second hand. I’d never heard of them and can’t remember what it was. My point is some hold their price better than others. Japanese Takamines do well second hand. However, i did bag a EAN40 12 string Takamine on Fleabay for £350 a few weeks ago.

I have two Avalons and one Lowden and quality wise there’s nothing between them - equally good but not the same. The Avalons are not the same as each other either. Great guitars but you must play to decide if any guitar is for you. Vinny

There is a very nice Avalon in Vintage and Rare in Bath, but at nearly £3k it’s not exactly cheap!

Avalons are lovely but I can see why they wouldn't do well at Dawsons. Dawsons are too mainsteam and their staff, in general, aren't up to much.
On the used sales side, I've found Martins to sell quickly and at a at not too much of a loss, from new.

They are good guitars and are often at a better price than Lowden. Every new one I have played has been very new, very tight, but I guess they would open up quickly.

Probably and I think the guitar I tried was this one. I sold my L325 on this forum last year - an action I regret but I needed the money at the time - but this guitar was way better. I think I also tried this one but it wasn't as good.

Avalon were once Lowden and changed their name when Mr Lowden came back on the scene.

They're also different from the ones they were making before they went into insolvent liquidation. I guess there must have been personnel changes then (and since!)
