Got a free ticket to Purbeck festival, where Richard Thompson was headlining tonight. Bloody hell he’s awesome. Played mostly stuff from his new album due out in September, and it was stunning. Almost all electric stuff. The only two acoustic numbers were, you guessed it, Beeswing and 1952 Vincent Black Lightening. The drummer was bloody amazing too.
Tired now, more about Purbeck tomorrow,
Robbie

I saw him a few years ago. One of the best gigs I've ever been to.

I don't want to be controversial but I really don't see what people see in RT at all. I find his voice to be lacking in something and apart from a handful of decent songs best covered by other singers it's all a bit naf to me. Overrated. He was live on the Old Grey Whistle Test 'extravaganza' at Xmas 2017 and he was not very good in my opinion. There I've said it Let the onslaught begin Phil

I know what you mean Phil. He has a few songs that I really like, but many that don't appeal at all including the new one above.

I know what you mean Phil, I try to like his music. And I also think Tear Stained Letter and some of the others are great.
Is this divided opinion what people mean by 'marmite'?

He is an extraordinary performer- his piercing blue eyes and commanding stance are just mesmerising. He is probably one of the coolest 70 year guys I’ve ever seen 🙂. And the way he plays the Strat is like nothing else I’ve heard. I think if John Coltrane was a guitarist and not a tenor sax player, he would sound something like Thompson.

Robbie His electric playing is what I find particularly unimpressive: the stuff I've heard mostly what we would have called in the old days 'running the scales' over chord changes.

A friend of mine has just uploaded this video from the gig
As I say in my comment to the video, I find this level of talking through a performance so upsetting. It’s downright rude. Why do people pay £130 to go to a festival just to talk? They could have done that at home or down the pub. Makes my blood boil !!!

Hoping to catch some of his set on Friday - anyone else planning to go to Towersey this year by the way?
