Some of the frets (well a lot of the frets) on my cheap classical have rough edges, very noticeable when going up and down the fingerboard. I know there are kits out there that probably cost more than the guitar did, or I could get a set up done for £35 at Ron's, but how easy is it to do it yourself?

Could be risky if never done it before and you would have to buy the correct tools which would probably cost more than the £35.00 you would be charged to get it done.
I had a small Brook that it happened to, I took it to KBG on the Wirral to see if they could be dressed before I sold it. They wouldn't do it as they said it would damage the lacquer. At the time I trusted their judgment.
However, I now think it can be done without risking damage to the fretboard.

J A Brook with bad frets? 😮 It wasn't bad frets per se, the fretboard had shrunk and the fret ends protruded and felt sharp on the hands. I believe this is similar to what was described. There is a Brook Tamar in Forsyth Manchester with the same problem. Its been there for months, I told them they needed to get it sorted. It's like holding a cheese grater.

Its why you should always get ANY guitar back to its maker, or a good tech, after its first year. Would moves, its takes on moisture or it dries out, its not a fault, its just what happens to well made instruments as they are learning to be instruments and not chunks of wood.
And no, fret dressing is certainly NOT a job I would want to do myself. You need the right tools.

Bit of masking tape, a wee file, no problem
