hi can any one recommend an app for building chord progressions as backing tracks to single line improvisations? I downloaded a few free ones from the app store but only Backing Track Builder by Corona was usable, its very good but limited in the type of chords one can choose, diminished chords are not on the list for instance. I don't mind paying for something which can play a wide range of different chord types in different styles.

I'm not an app person, and so would recommend you record your own backing tracks - which would be free - would that be possible for you?

I quite like using something like Backing Track Builder, I can record my own backing tracks but using an app is faster , individual chords are easily changed and variety of rythmns can be 'on tap'. It's just that something with a wider choice of chords and more importantly the abilty to change chords on individual beats would be a great tool if i can find one that works well.

When I need customized backing tracks I still use my Boss DR-880. Yes, I know, a bit oldfashioned. However, it's easy to handle and does what it should, no matter whether I use acoustic or electric guitar. It's an old machine, so maybe with a little luck you might find a bargain.

Thanks for that suggestion , though for the time being I still think a versatile phone app would suit my requirements if a functional one exists,I only want to use it to practice creating melodies over progressions for my own amusement. I shall keep trying new ones and post a review if I find one that works well.

I know that this is an old thread but I just discovered a program called "Chordpulse" that is a sort of poor man's BIAB. Free full featured trial and only $29 USD to buy. The sounds are decent and you can output the files as standard midi to DAW or whatever to work with them. Very easy to use little program.
