I've been a fan of Nick's since I first saw him playing a short set at a Roy Harper gig back in 1992 or 93. I've seen him countless times and I never tire of seeing him play. So you'll imagine my joy when I heard that he was playing a house concert in Glasgow, a rather posh house in the west end with a living room of generous proportions. I'd contacted Nick a few times by email and Twitter asking if he'd be up for an interview but hadn't heard back, so I thought it was a non starter. But when I arrived he mentioned it right away and was very gracious.
First thing's first though - 'Nick, where's your Lowden?' The only time I've seen him play anything other than a Lowden was when he came to Arran with an empty guitar case by mistake and borrowed my Driezehnter for the gig. He does allude to that at the end of the interview, so I guess it's okay for me to share that embarrassing tale! But no, no Lowden this time; he's now playing a PRS. Not a fancy schmancy one like McManus and Simpson, just an off-the-shelf one but with banjo tuners naturally. And it sounded great! He talks about that in the interview too.
I didn't get any video of the interview, so it's an audio only podcast, but I did get lots of video of the concert, one of which I've published on my YouTube channel. I'll trickle more out over the coming few days. It was the song he ended the set with, an absolute belter of a song and the story that goes with it. I have uploaded the full version with the introduction, where he gets a little emotional tellling the story and it was a really moving moment. I'd rather not make that one public though, so if you want to see it, PM me - it's on YouTube as unlisted.
Have a wee listen and see what you think. Apologies for the background noise, but you gets what you gets.
