Sorry if this derails the thread a bit but anyone know whether individual luthiers in the UK who have a limited output per year have to charge VAT? I know that Brook guitars do but wondered if that is the case for smaller businesses? Cheers, marcus

You'll be fine. Our taxation system (for the time being) only kicks in when the value of the imported goods plus shipping costs exceeds AUD$999 (about 500 pounds). Once you break that threshold then all hell breaks loose.
This is likely to change in future as online international shopping continues to grow. It puts local retailers at a big disadvantage as they have to include GST (10%) on local sales. Having said that, the Aussie dollar has dropped around 20% in value over the last year or so making it less attractive to buy from overseas and seeing as we're at the bottom of the world shipping is always expensive. Funnily enough I'm guessing that local luthiers wouldn't collect GST on their guitars. Cheers, marcus

Glad you got your DI fishfingers.
Can I ask a question? Not being from your neck of the woods I don't know your import laws. What kind of taxes do you pay on imported goods and does it apply to all goods (new and used) of any value?
Cheers, marcus

I'm glad you posted that as a link Phil... otherwise I would really have been confused as to how a strap to your boots could relieve tennis elbow from playing guitar

Hi Phil,
I'm sorry to hear that you're still experiencing pain... and that it's not just in one place. Can I ask what the benefit is of playing with a strap?
Hope you get some improvement soon.
All the best, marcus

Thanks michaelm. The guitar is going to need a setup so I'll get that sorted at the same time. Cheers, marcus

I'm very glad you got this sorted out michalem. I'm even gladder that you posted the soundclip as I seem to be getting something very similar on a used guitar I picked up recently with some kind of pickup in it. The buzz seems to occur when fretting at a variety of places but I've found that it lessens when I angle the guitar away from my body and face the top towards the floor. This suggests that a cable is losing contact with the body when I do this.
Can I ask how the good doc fixed your problem?
Cheers, marcus

Good luck with scratching that itch breedlover. Resistance is probably futile.
This reminds me that had had awful gas for the wee lowden (well that sounds like the first line of a schoolboy joke) when they first came out. But I've heard very little about them. Has anyone had a chance to play one?
Cheers, marcus
