What a super instrument. And the guitar as well! I hope you washed your hands after the fish and chips before playing it.

Martin Simpson Claudio Abbado Floor Jansen Arjen Anthony Lucassen Troy Donockley Christy Moore Johanna Kurkela Tuomas Holapainen Peter Hammill Hugh Laurie Jake Thackray Better stop! So many others are possible! Truth is I'd probably be too shy and reserved to say a single word in elite company like that. Mark You'll be encouraging Leo to extend his list at this rate as he moaned about the rules. 🤣

Thanks all for taking part. Some interesting choices and, as Keith says, most of us would choose a different 4 on another day.
What is noticeable is that, with about 15 people posting their 4 supper companions (which is therefore around 60 choices in total) there are only a very few selections with around 2 or 3 'votes'. Overall something like 30-40 different choices. Just goes to show the variety of styles/genre etc that we all enjoy. Lots of names I didn't even know and I've looked up quite a few on youtube and enjoyed them.

Woody Mann Gretchen Peters Aimee Mann Mark Knopfler Be nice if we could write a song together I found it hard to leave Knopfler out. Put him down for me as 1st reserve (along with half a dozen others!).

I could narrow it down to a list of a couple of dozen, but picking names out of a hat: Ralph McTell Dave Evans Paul Simon James Taylor At the end we'd do a selection of everyone's greatest hits, and then throw bread rolls at Evans for being a technical smartarse. Ralph always tells his audience he is going to sing something from his album 'Greatest Hit' so we know what that would be.

OK, I've had a think. Aimed at some controversial/enlightening discussion as well as musical memories ...
Paul Simon Neil Young Linda Ronstadt Tom Paxton
and we'd sing at the end of the day 'Imagine'

Hi,
Just a bit of fun as it's raining again!
Who would you want as your supper companions (to chat with, not play) if you were restricted to people with musical connections.
Rules are simple.
--For this thread you can only choose 4 people.
--Either (or, to be politically correct, should I say 'any') sex.
--They can be alive or dead.
--Only one other forum member allowed on your table (but to avoid favoritism or controversy perhaps no forum members?)
--No need to wash anyone's feet (and if you were to include Leo that would have been a major obstacle)
And, if at the end of the meal you were all to sing/play one song together, what would it be.
FFJ (I'll reveal mine later after I've picked up some ideas).

My money would be on more than one 'revival' tour sometime in the future. I hope so!

OK, I know I'm a GL nutter but had to share this video play-thru. Jerry's lessons show the guitar part but using the vocal audio track of the GL original. This track embodies everything that GL was like before his vocals went. Superb lyric, wonderful melody, unusual chords and progressions which combine major, minor and major 7ths (and others), superb fingerstyle and that rich creamy vocal which just gets inside you. I can't think of any singer of his genre who has a better vocal.
Hey ho, I wish.

I think this sums it up for me, a song I heard for the first time at a Merry Hell gig a few months ago (seeing them ahain in a few weeks). I know it's written from a female perspective but you'll get the drift. Not having any strong religious or afterlife thoughts at all (although perhaps 15 minutes before I croak that may change ...) I don't see that my funeral is of any benefit to me, more perhaps for those who wish to remember/celebrate my passing. So, as simple as possible please; cardboard box is fine with me and keep it jolly.

That's a beautiful looking instrument, John. I've always fancied an all hog guitar... I may be just a little bit jealous! You'll be bringing her to HBxvi, of course... Would love to, although timing a bit difficult as we fly to Portugal on the Monday after. Will try to fit it in though.

I’ll keep the story as brief as possible! A while back, due to the need to downsize, I donated my lovely Regency/Georgian square piano, which had been converted to a beautiful desk, to Adrian Lucas who I knew loved using reclaimed material for his guitar builds. We had purchased this some 30 years ago and, whilst we didn’t know anything about when it was a piano, it was a beautiful item, made largely from mahogany. Adrian performed his miracles on it and the resultant all-mahogany ‘Pergola’ guitar became part of the 'Boutique Guitar Showcase European Tour' in September 2023, shown across nine venues including Sweden, Italy and France. By amazing coincidence, some 2 months later, I saw on a TV programme about Beatrix Potter, a square mahogany piano which looked more or less identical to my old desk, clearly from the same maker. It turned out this was a renowned composer and pianist called Muzio Clementi (January 1752 – March 1832) who became known as the ‘Father of the Piano’ by manufacturing top quality instruments, and also founded a group of musicians known then as the "Philharmonic Society of London", which became the Royal Philharmonic Society in 1912. Having discovered such an impressive provenance, I couldn’t resist contacting Adrian again and was amazed when he said he still had the guitar! It didn’t take much thought for me to make the purchase decision, despite the fact I didn’t ‘need’ another guitar. But ‘need’ didn’t come into it. I have had little time in the last 3 days to play her (she’s called ‘Beatrix’ by the way) but she is magnificent and very different from my other instruments. Adrian’s love of using reclaimed material (Beatrix is all solid Honduras Mahogany with an English Holly fretboard and rosette and bog oak inlays, Douglas fir bracing from an old door and a mahogany neck from a reclaimed pool table). Short in stature doesn't deflect from having a wonderfully balanced tone. I’m so lucky to have been able to ‘square’ the circle; Regency square piano, to desk, to guitar, and back to me with Adrian being the magician. Here's some pics; my converted paino; the piano in Beatrix Potter's house; the guitar; the lucky owner. FFJ

He finally realised how old and decrepid I am! An electrically heated hot water bottle. And an extra long hot water bottle. A sort of padded memory foam cushion to put between my knees in bed to keep my back and knees in line when lying on my side. And 7 different tins of shortbread biscuits. (I think I might have said sometime ago that you can't go wrong with shortbread biscuits ... ). Only music thingy is a double CD of Merry Hell who ww really enjoyed when we saw them in October in Portugal. Oh and a nice fleecy jumper with a guitar on the front. Next year I guess it will be a mobility scooter, raised toilet seat, walking frame and other mobility aids. Hey ho!! FFJ
