I love Brook guitars and they do have a dread model (the Teign) which occasionally comes up for sale second hand within your budget - there was one for sale on Glenn's Guitars website recently, though I'm not sure if it's still there. The thing about Brook, though, is that their guitars really lean more to fingerpicking styles, and if you're looking for more of a classic dread sound they may not be what you want.
You might want to check out the Moon RD3 - it's a spruce/rosewood dread that they've been making for years and I think wouldn't be too far out of your price range (and again, they do come up for sale used every now and then). They're handbuilt, so you could always ask for custom options - I find Moon's standard nut widths a bit narrow, but they would make a wider one if you prefer that. Their big claim to fame is that Bryan Adams used an RD3 on a tour a few years ago - make of that what you will...

A friend of mine had one for years and it sounded good plugged in, but (in my opinion, at least) less good acoustically. He still has it, but I know he's had some problems with the neck recently and doesn't think it will be playable for much longer. He took it to a guitar tech, but got exactly the response that colins describes. That does seem to be an issue with Ovation-style guitars: they're fine as long as they're in good working order, but if anything goes wrong they're a lot harder to fix than other acoustics.

Hi christophe , and welcome. Like Keith I haven't played this particular model, but I've played quite a few Tanglewoods in the lower price range and I've always found them to be excellent value for money. They're well made instruments that play nicely and sound good for guitars at this price point. Obviously it's always best to try it for yourself if you can, but that's understandably difficult at the moment. Ebony does get used as a tonewood on some high-end guitars and can sound fantastic, but as Keith says the ebony on the Tanglewood will be a laminate.

Congratulations, Leo - looking forward to seeing this one take shape. Is coyote wood the same stuff that Dave used for ocarolan's octave mandolin?

Looks good so far, ag123. Not sure I've seen that body shape before. What scale length will it have?

Hi misterpaul and welcome to the forum. There's a lot of choice around that price range. You could be looking at some of the higher-end builders who also do some more affordable models. Furch/Stonebridge are worth checking out (they sell under both brand names, but it's the same builders). I've also played some Breedloves that I've liked. Eastman get a lot of good reviews too, though I can't speak from personal experience with those. With your budget, you might also find second-hand guitars by some higher-end builders. It's worth checking out online shops like Glenn's Guitars, as they might have some things in your price range. Happy searching!

Just saw on their channel that they’ve had to take down ‘Have the New Jab’ because Sony have withdrawn permission to use the music. They’ve put the video with their lyrics back up, but without sound.
Seems a ridiculously mean-spirited thing for the record label to do, given that it’s not only a non-profit video but is trying to promote a life-saving medical treatment.

There's nothing quite like being given a sense of musical inadequacy by two children in animal onesies Seriously, this is brilliant.

This one is on piano rather than guitar, but it's a great example of how to take a "big" song that's usually performed as a power ballad and strip it right down. There's a very different feeling than in the better-known versions (Harry Nilsson's original, Mariah Carey's cover), but it's entirely suited to the lyrics and, for me, far more moving than the power-ballad versions.

Just to throw in my experience of a Headway UST, which I had installed in a Fylde mandolin. The sound was pretty good as USTs go, and it certainly cut through the mix. The issue that I had with it was volume: there was too much of it! I usually play all my instruments through a single channel using an Orchid acoustic preamp, and I had real trouble switching to the mandolin because the signal from the pickup was so much hotter than everything else I was playing. Obviously this wouldn't be an issue if you're not switching between instruments on the same channel, but it's something to keep in mind if you are.
I use K&Ks in pretty much everything now, and it definitely makes my setup more straightforward.

It's always great to hear what your guitars can do in the hands of an expert, Rosie. The guitar in the video sounds lovely - if the tone was any warmer you could switch off the central heating It will be great to see the new one take shape.
