I heard this guy recently in an online interview/session with Martyn Joseph. He's an utterly astonishing electric blues player, and he seems to know his way around an acoustic guitar too.

Companies like Tanglewood and Freshman make some nice electro-acoustics in that price range. You also might find a Breedlove at the upper end of your budget. Keep in mind though that it's fairly easy to get a pickup fitted to an acoustic, so if you find a non-electro guitar that you like, the lack of a pickup shouldn't necessarily put you off. A decent guitar shop will probably be able to either fit a pickup for you or point you in the direction of someone who can do it.

Nice to catch up with this thread and see the guitar taking shape. That Rio rosewood fretboard looks great - a much under-appreciated part of guitar aesthetics in my view!

Well, with a £3k budget I'd either be looking at a parlour or OO-size 12-fret, or one of Nick Oddy's (son of David Oddy) SK jumbos. If I went with the smaller guitar, then another Brook would be within the price range and would definitely be a contender. On the other hand, the Oddy would come in under budget and would leave room for a deposit on one of his tenor guitars or cuatros. But in reality I'll probably end up getting the bathroom redecorated

So far I’ve been spending a lot of time with the octave mandolin that davewhite made for me a couple of years ago. I’ve usually used it when I’ve been playing with other people, mostly doing fills and a few chords. What I’ve never really done with it is solo arrangement, and that’s what I’m getting into now. At the moment I’m working on a couple of old hymn tunes, which is a handy place to start for me because I know the four-part choral arrangements so am starting with an idea of how they’re usually harmonised. I don’t have any specific plans beyond working on these pieces, but will see where it leads.

I haven’t played the more recent Atkins, so take this with a pinch of salt. When I played a couple a few years ago, they left me fairly cold at first when I played some fingerstyle tunes. I was about to move on, but just out of interest tried one with a plectrum and it absolutely came to life - really responsive, punch and lively. After playing them, it made sense to me that the professional musicians I’ve seen using them have tended to be flatpickers rather than fingerpickers - they definitely struck me as flatpickers’ guitars. If that’s you want, you could get a really nice guitar. If you’re after more of a fingerstyle instrument, my advice would be to try before you buy as an Atkin might not suit.
As I said though, this is an impression from a few years ago, so they may be building differently now.

This weekend's weather made me think of one of my favourite rhymes, from the American folk song 'Oklahoma Home'.
Mister, as I bent to kiss her, She was picked up by a twister, My Oklahoma woman blown away.

I played a couple of Hullah’s - nice guitars. I played a Hullah too - it was fairly old and had clearly had a hard life, but it still played well and sounded good. When I first saw it I thought it was a Fylde - very similar style.

I haven’t played one myself, but an old friend had one of his early tenor guitars and was very happy with it. This was someone who had 6 or 7 David Oddy instruments at the time, so I’d be inclined to trust his judgment.

If you order one it takes three years to arrive and then you find it's a spray-painted kazoo.

I'd be willing to bet that Gibson have been quite happy to have all those other companies making Les Pauls, flying V's, etc, over the decades. It helped establish those designs as industry standards while allowing Gibson to position theirs as the only authentic ones. However many companies made Les Paul copies, Gibson were the only ones making the real thing. If you were a young player who bought a cheap Les Paul copy, you probably dreamed of owning a Gibson one day.
Makes me wonder why they've decided to change course now. Maybe the brand reputation isn't what it was.
That said, personally I think that whoever invented the Flying V should be pelted with rotten fruit in the town square, but maybe that's just me.

I have a TC Electronic Mini Spark. Just one knob and it's brilliant. That's the one I was thinking of. It needs a power supply though, doesn't it? Yes, I think all the TC mini pedals need power supplies. Some of the full-size ones take batteries, though there are some mixed reviews of how well that works. I have a few TC pedals and I really like them, but I’ve only used them with a power supply.
