Yes - but the different relative bridge position really does make a difference to the sound (in my experience). I don't know quite what it is, but it's there. To the extent that I have tried out multiple guitars in shops and at shows and, without having spotted that a guitar is a 12-fretter, I have immediately preferred it when playing it. [/div] I've been thinking about this change of bridge position as it relates to the right hand, too. I've been really struggling to get my flat picking to sound as fluent as I want, and it struck me that my natural right arm position, when flat picking, is putting the pick quite close to the bridge, where physics would determine that the strings are a little tougher to pick. So I tried the same tune with my 12 fret gypsy jazzer and... Wow! Instant improvement in feel. Early days yet, but I may have hit upon something that could help my playing a lot. Maybe not, of course. Will try and post the song in question one of these days.

Excellent stuff. Both the fact that it happened and the recounting of it. Glad you that you got so much benefit from it, too. I'm a huge advocate of lessons, although I haven't had a proper face to face one since I was 13. I recall reading once that Howling Wolf took lessons all his life - whatever town he found himself in on tour he would seek out the most renown teacher and see what he could learn. It's never too late.
Looking forward to the next songs, now, Leo.

That version of White Freightliner Blues was great!

Rory plays with the Transatlantic Trio with Joscho Stephane and Richard Smith. He holds his own, very easily, and we're talking the top players in the world here. I also saw a video of him backing up the incredible jazz player Clint Strong on one of those Guitar Gathering YouTube videos, and Clint Strong was throwing all these ideas and examples out there to demo what was flying through his mind at lightning speed and Rory was just picking them all up and comping perfectly. Incredible playing. Unbelievable ears!

Very sad news. I didn't know Paul, but I watched plenty of videos of him. I recall trying out one of his parlours once in a shop in Gloucester. Absolutely outstanding guitar.

The duo hasn't rehearsed since early December due to Christmas and other reasons. But we had a practice today and though my gypsy picking technique has been adversely affected by a few weeks of strictly alternating picking (that'll be flat-picking to blame) we still sounded pretty darn good. I even played the clarinet on one tune, and it certainly sounded passable, although not sure I'll use it on the gig. Yes, you read that right, we have a gig in the diary :-) First one for this duo, and it's only an afternoon session at HMV. But, after a few open mics, it's progress in the right direction.

Not sure how good a resonator you'd get for that. I must confess I don't play mine as much as I should. I think I'll try and put that right very soon!

My collection would be
3 electrics 1 archtop 1 resonator 2 gypsy jazz guitars 4 flat top acoustics
which is probably 1 electric, 1 gypsy jazz guitar, and 2 acoustics beyond what is "necessary" (i.e. to cover gigs, although that's a bit disingenuous on account of there being few gigs these days).

Nothing nicer than finger picking a few chord progressions on an acoustic. Amen!

Was at a funeral for an old band mate on Thursday, and the entrance song was Howling Wolf doing Smokestack Lightning. Good song, and Robbie would have appreciated it.

I'm forever looking at new guitars, or indeed old guitars, and dreaming. So I don't think the desire stops. But space is a very real limiting factor, as is time to play the various guitars one already has. Plus, I do ask myself what is it that my existing guitars don't do for me that I need a new one to do? Occasionally there is a genuine answer for that question that could warrant a new guitar, but most of the time I think practice could achieve the desired aim, and would need to be done with a new guitar, anyway. Sorry to be boring.

I've never owned a Gibson, but do like the look of their Jumbo's. I've long had a hankering for the slightly smaller size jumbo. That sound port is a good idea. I think many if us spend a good proportion of our time playing for ourselves, after all.

Araldite, WD40, and Gaffa tape. That'll see you all right, Francis.
