I once saw the a near relation of the Seldom Scene, the Country Gentlemen, in action. Their show was heavily laced with goofy humour too - in truth it was a bit mad - but when they played they left no doubt of their supreme musicianship. Bluegrass fans actually owe something of a debt to those Washington-based bands because they weren't afraid to experiment with sounds, grooves and song material, They helped to keep the music fresh when it could have become bogged-down in the established format and repertoire.

As the heading says, at time of writing you can get 30% off ebooks from melbay.com. Enter the code that appears at the top of the page on checkout. It's a good deal, and the exchange rate isn't bad at the moment either.
Just got myself a couple of nice tunebooks.

Now there's an instrument that carries a sense of its own presence, even in a picture. Rather beautiful, especially with that colour.

Sweet sounds there mate, especially considering they're new instruments. (I half expected one of the lads from the Incredible String Band to start singing ever-so-slightly out of time on the dulcimer demo.)
You do realise that you've left Keith still another opening to invoke the spirit of Benny Hill with that last post, don't you? Come to think of it, I'm taking a risk using the word "opening".

Sounds excellent, but rubs it in a bit. We seriously looked into going, having heard from someone that Butlins was dog-friendly, but were quickly disabused of that idea when we phoned up. I'm getting pretty much resigned to never going away for a holiday now.

Looks like I'm going to have to buy the Sweet Revenge album, WD. Great songs. Always loved John Prine, but I don't have all his stuff. Maybe I should. It's one of his patchier albums to be honest, Paul. Possibly a reason why he re-recorded all of its best songs (apart from the splendidly bitter The Accident) on Souvenirs.

Yeah, thanks to 007 for bringing John's songs up. Many are deceptively simple, with their meanings unfolding over time. I remember that I'd listened to The Great Compromise half a dozen times before I realised that it was actually about the Vietnam War.
This one is just beautiful...
...while this is heartbreaking.

I don't mind either way as long as they sound good, but as I'm a pinkie planter a satin job should really have a scratchboard. A mahogany Vintage I have has suffered from the lack of one by developing a shiny polished area under the soundhole.

My new interest in acoustic instruments in the last 5 months has put paid to downsizing in a big way, and I'm not sure if I've permanently given up on the electrics yet and I've kept them, so it's getting crowded! Mark My advice is don't get rid of them even if you think you've given up on them. Keep a favourite at least. Long ago I gave up my job as a pro musician and sold my workhorse Telecaster and most of my other instruments in a moment that was was like slamming the door on the person I'd been. When I returned to playing after the hiatus I stayed acoustic for the first few years and thought I was happy that way. Then I met up with one of my old bandmates again, he gave me access to his Hohner and Washburn electrics - and I actually got a bit emotional, so overwhelming was the sense of coming home. I suddenly remembered how different playing an electric actually is to playing acoustic, and just what I could do on one. Now the Washburn is on what seems to be a sort of permanent loan to me - but I still remember the feel and the particular sound of that trail worn old Telecaster, and I'd love to have it back.

John Prine also wrote two of the most affecting songs about masturbation you'll ever hear.
(Some wonderful ethereal steel guitar on the first.)

Absolutely, WD. Instruments are for buying, not for selling! And having heard several of your recordings over the years, as far as I'm concerned, you always make the right decisions on what to record with. I wouldn't mind being as good as you on one instrument, let alone all the ones you play. I guess it's called "musicianship". I think they'd run out of that in the shop where I tried to buy some. (sigh) Thanks Paul. A huge compliment from someone who's selling their own musicianship far too short - and one that would doubtless be revised if you'd heard me playing at the weekend.

I never sell anything now, as I've missed everything I let go in my last night of the long knives. I have found that when I've returned to instruments I've mentally tagged as redundant after an interval I've approached them with fresh ears and started to enjoy them again. There have also been moments when I've been recording when I've thought, "Wait, I know which instrument would work better on this..."

And if you want to get a head start on fingerpicking John Hurt's My Creole Belle provides a good primer in how it's done.
