Never really been a GASser, and I'm in the happy position of being content with the instruments I've got. I may change the cone in my Dobro at some stage, but it already sounds good to me, so there's no hurry.

I think it sounds less thin and dry through speakers than it does in actuality - and it's like trying to fret the cables on a suspension bridge. I may try sanding the bridge a bit more and strapping it to the back of an upright speaker for a few months. The latter certainly helped mature a dulcimer I have.
Yep, it's amazing what you can get at the budget end these days. I bought an all solid Kentucky mando for something over 200 quid last year and finally got around to taking it out and playing it for a few hours yesterday. Turns out that while it's still a bit stiff it has a really pure, sweet tone. I can't stop myself picking it up and noodling on it now.

In good news, Mumford and Sons are done for good.
And he probably hates the banjo because he was crap on it.

I've used Fender heavies for everything for many years now. They have a clean, bright tone I like, and I think knowing them so well helps me keep control of dynamics. When I tried Martin heavies recently they just felt too soft and didn't have the same slick snap and bounce off the strings. What Fenders do you use ? Is it the gel ones or the fake tortoise shell ? I found that too that the fender ones were a bit stiffer than the Martin of the same type . I use the clear celluloid ones, now rebranded as "California Clears." I know where I am with them, where if I use a pick with any sort of yield I find I have less control. One of my primary influences was Clarence White, and I learned a lot about picks and dynamics from an after-concert conversation I cornered him into in 1973. It was all about fine control of the pick with musculature for Clarence, to the extent that he even experimented with playing with a chunk of stiff plastic.

Hah! That's superb. Brilliantly done video. (Missing Dennis, who posted above. Anyone know if he's OK?) I noticed he's been away for quite a while, but I can see he logged in last at the end of December. I'll message him and see if I hear anything. Thanks Martin. Hope he just drifted away for a bit and he's OK.

Now that's a good sound, and some great playing to boot. I think I may have its ancestor. Same country of origin, solid spruce top and some similar design principles - but in this form terrible sound, and longbow action, even after much fiddling and sanding. It's literally been gathering dust for some time, as you can see! The upside is that I bought it for 30 quid from someone at the folk club. Sound sample
