Very similar Nigel, sounds great, I like 'S' for simple. There's a few recent photos on Daoiri's Facebook page of his... Lozenge shaped sound hole and tailpiece, Irish maker I think. There is no shortage of makers out there...

Interesting video, thanks. I went to see Daoiri Farrell this evening, he was playing two bouzoukis, his newer one looked more like a guitar, the other was his old flat back type. Great player and singer, he's off to London next, worth seeing He's a great player. He was probably playing this type of thing...

Yes and no. Like others have said, a great player can sound great on any instrument. You can play anything on anything. That said, certain guitars have certain sounds. One of the reasons Martin Simpson turned out to be such a great ambassador for Sobell guitars is the guitars suited him so well. In the 90s, Martin would teach a small courses in the US, with 3 or 4 fellers all with Martins and Taylors and such. They just couldn't sound like him regardless of how good their technique was until they played his Sobell. At the end of the course, many of the players had ordered Sobell guitars. It was the only way you could get that explosive sound. Django sounds "right" on a Selmer. He's still great playing an electric, but it just isn't the same. The Selmer sound suited his playing. Hank Marvin sounds like Hank Marvin regardless of wether he was playing a Burns or a Strat. But the Strat sound he had is classic Shadows. So, yes, I'm sorry to say, the gear is a big part of the sound. Not always, but sometimes. Nigel www.nkforsterguitars.com

Just made a compilation of the many tenor guitar music videos I've produced over the last few years. I made the first Session King tenor guitar on spec, and wasn't sure if they'd turn out popular. It actually took a while to sell, and I didn't sell it for all that much, but since then I've made many tenor guitars and they've sold all over the world. In part, thanks to these videos. So thanks to all the lads who helped make the videos possible. Pour yourself a glass of something pleasant and enjoy 18 mins or so of great music. The mandolin batch had to stop for a few weeks whilst I made an archtop guitar for a chap I'd left for too long. But a nice reminder arrived this morning - a pair of cases to test fit for my Big Celtic mandolins. They look pretty robust... Nigel www.nkforsterguitars.com

Lovely work as always, Nigel. I really like the rosette on the Session King - it's very striking without being at all "blingy". Ta. I thought I'd give it a try - it's about as flashy as I get. It looks lovely "in the flesh." So I think I'll offer it as an option for future builds for those who like it. Nigel www.nkforsterguitars.com

And to answer Martins' question from another thread - you don't soak the masking tape with superglue. If you do you get a sliding mess that doesn't stick well. You use only a little. I used to use double sided tape, but this leaves almost no residue behind whereas most the double sided tapes I've used did. At some point (probably our next summer which can be too wet to build) I'll start replacing the tape with vacuum clamping. So much quicker.

A year or so ago I bought a spindle moulder. I learned how to use one at uni - the technicians there were old school machinists, and if you didn't mind having the mickey taken, you could watch them work. Then in 2004 I spent most the year working for a joiner in Newcastle, and was on the spindle quite a bit making windows, doors and stairs. So it was nice to get one for the workshop. Not as versatile as a CNC, but they suit my brain a lot better. And they are a lot faster than a CNC. Please take note - spindles are dangerous. These are not instructional videos. They are demonstrations of me working. If you plan to use one, get taught how to use one safely. Don't copy my methods. Use safety goggles, ear protection, brown trousers and bicycle clips. If it kicks back or grabs, you'll need them. So, what do I do with it? Mainly I make necks. Here are a few of the jobs I use it for. Planing the head and trimming the neck rear profile: Cutting the neck tenon in one pass: Cutting the ramp for the neck extension: www.instagram.com/p/CPbwi0IDPIW/Cutting the wedge that fits it on the table saw: www.instagram.com/p/CPcMY1UDMxu/Cutting the truss rod slot in one pass: www.instagram.com/p/COyx2M2jwYM/And carving the neck itself: Nigel www.nkforsterguitars.com

Oh, apologies: the facebook link you posted on here - a couple of posts above the pictures above this post - 'roughing out mandolin neck on spindle moulder and router'. Start a thread with a link in the builders section Martin.

Nigel On the Spindle Moulder is that masking tape mated with masking tape with super glue to keep them together?. Doesn't the glue soak through when you take it off and 'damage' the neck. I could use that for something I'm trying to do i.e. use a router bit to follow an elliptical template without affecting any of the two parts, My problem was how to attach the part firmly to the template without damaging the part or the template when separating them after the cut has been made..I thought of using industrial double sided tape. I'm fairly new to using a router so was a bit stuck, but that looks like it might work for what I'm trying to do. Interesting -thanks Martin I'e no idea what video you are referring to but by all means start a fresh thread so I can see what you're on about Martin.
