I'm looking to get some input on this - I'm a relatively new player, and to date I've been taking lessons pretty much continually - so I don't really have to think about what to practice and any noodling I do is ancillary to my lesson goals for the week. However I am currently on a 2-month break from lessons, and despite initial thoughts that I would "finish" a couple of pieces, work on exercises, pick a new piece to learn, etc. that has all gone by the wayside. - In fact, without someone setting goals for me, I'm not actually achieving anything. (And I do like to have something to show for my efforts). To date I've messed around with a ragtime piece and given up because there's no conceivable way I can use my thumb on the 6th string ( I mostly play a 52mm classical and I have short fingers). Actually I think I would need a 40mm nut to make it happen (do they make them even?) And barre chords in combination with hammer-ons and pull-offs may be in my future but not in my present. I've been noodling with bossa nova progressions but have to work up to fretting some of those tricky 7ths, 9ths etc, and the rhythms keep getting mixed up in my head. (I'm waiting for guidance.... ) I've experimented with altered tunings, but found it too confusing to have to rely on TAB (I may not be good at it, but notation is the only way I can translate notes on page to noise on guitar).... So obviously I need to be more focused when I pick up the guitar. Does anyone else have this problem? Suggestions?

I'm the exception - all electronic - I use Pandora, Spotify, and Amazon streaming, download MP3's (or the upgraded download, whatever that is) from ITunes, and listen to UK radio stations via TuneinRadio Can't remember the last time I cranked up the CD player and my (large) CD collection has dust all over it. However I have ripped most of it onto the computer (and hence the iPhone).

Well with my limited guitar skills - who knows if I'll learn anything, but I'm definitely going with the intention of having a good time! Had a blast at this weekend camp folkcollege.com for folk instruments a couple of months ago (lots of fiddles, some bazookas, a dobro, hammer dulcimers, harmonicas, penny whistles ---- and more than a few guitars... fascinating) and decided I wanted more!!! (ended up with groups of us ON STAGE playing and singing harmony... yikes! (harmony sounded pretty good if I say so myself, but the playing, not so sure!!!). At these camps you get the option of staying college dorms, but if you've seen US college dorm rooms (or experienced the beds) you may choose to stay at somewhere less designed to cause permanent back damage and get some sleep !!!

I had trouble reading the review cos I lost track trying to chain the words together between deletions... so I didn't. I don't normally listen to them, but when I was trying to come up with good easy tunes I didn't have to practice beforehand for our local jam - their "I will wait" was just the ticket ... kept well within my chord limit!!! (3, maybe 4...)

He played to a packed "barn" outside Baltimore earlier this year....courtesy of my friend who went to college with him and arranged it! Super enjoyable - I think he can do anything. I bought his compilation live performance CD signed...

Great to hear this - I think I might try them on my Taw, which always sounds a bit "jangly" to me... (but I like minor keys and dark sounds....)

That's a good thought! - Someone more knowledgeable than me answered this on another forum - quote" In jazz, when you begin adding extentions above the 7th, you also begin running out of fingers. The 5th is the first note to be omitted, followed by the root. A 7th, 9th, etc., chord without the 5th is not notated differently, since it is a common practice." Emily Remler said something similar about the 5th being not necessary in one on of her bossa nova youtube videos. For me, less fingers is always better! (and there's no way I can fret the C and the G for C7 with one finger either!

And to add to the confusion - A 7th chord is the 3 note chord with the addition of the flattened 7th(which is half a step - er- one fret- down from the 7th note of the scale. In contrast a major 7th chord adds the unflattened 7th note of the scale.... To give an example - the G7 in first position we all know and love has F natural added - this is the 'flattened' seventh because the 7th note of the G major scale is F#. G maj7 would add the F#. Clear as mud, right?
