Lovely job Francis. Is that top torrified? Phil No standard AAA Sitka spruce. It has had a thinned down coat of pale french polish just to keep finger marks at bay.

The body is now closed and has been trimmed...
I've not got round to really thinking much about bindings etc so I need to order some of those. The neck is the next part of the build to get going on but I'm having a few days break to soak up some starlight (if it ever clears up!) TBC.

Working on the soundboard bracing at the moment. Each is being profiled to slope back towards an edge so the top surfaces are constantly changing along their length. Also making sure the support braces under the soundhole are positioned correctly. I've used some masking tape and a temp fix of the soundboard which allows me to draw the soundhole end outline on the masking tape. Then position the braces from this outline. Once the bracing bonds have curved I can go over all the curves to make sure there are no lumps-n-bumps before closing the box.
Masking tape used to fix bracing positions
Bracing aligned to the outer edges of the masking tape
Bracing fitted. Halving joints used to avoid taking too much wood from either brace

The back plate is now on. This is the first guitar I've built that required me to fit the back braces to the sides first then fit the back plate. In a lot of way it was easier or beginners luck? I need to do the same with the soundboard too. That needs much more work with the first fit of the front bracing. A couple of 'dry' runs (that's no glue not me sober!). TBC...

Apol's been slacking lately. However. I've now added the heel and tail blocks. The linings I decided to make as reversed kerf linings with a lower rounded edge these were all slotted on the bandsaw after sizing the pieces and rounding one edge. Where the bends were tightest I've added extra slots to make the bending of the linings easier. Some areas were pre cracked to 'take' the linings in the right direction and prevent full breaks ocurring (didn't alway work ).
Bandsaw jig. Cut made then advanced to the line and new cut made...
First edges lined with the next set ready to fit
Second set fitted. Masking tap helps prevent marking.

Been quiet this week or so but I have been tinkering with the D-hole rosette and I've played around with a design and come up with something that is probably more traditional (for me) but not the usual rings of B&W lines...
The rosette has had a light sanding to bring it down to the soundboard surface, I haven't removed the soundhole itself yet as I wanted to get all the rosette pieces in place first so the inner ring of spruce withstood all the pulling around as the B&W lines and hardwood pieces were (eased!) into place. You have both photos as I couldn't decide which one to use...

Hi Phil, No. because it has a cutaway rather than a full body it will have a short scale with a 12th fret neck body join. Do they work ok with 630mm scale length? Phil Phil Taylor Scale length for this one is 640mm

Couple of hours later...
Well maybe three. Sides thicknessed to 2mm and the cutaway side bent to shape. Fitted in it's slot. I'll leave this till morning (it now has some support blocks to stop the ends from curling up) and start on the bass side which should be easier. I'm expecting to need some touch-up work on the cutaway bends to make sure the two edges have matching curves once it dries out.

I've had the plans for this build for a while now and I've spent some time going over them deciding what I wanted to keep and omit. The plans include an inner reflector and resonator which formed part of the original Maccaferri design but was later dropped when Selmer took over the production of the guitars. It's this simplified version that I'm going to try and replicate. There are other differences too: The back and sides of the guitar as designed are plywood. Whilst this is a laminated ply rather than your B*Q special flexi ply, I'm using solid wood and heat bending it to shape using a slotted base board as my pattern. The Santos Rosewood sides will be bent with a hot pipe so that the sides fit (hopefully) in the body outline. I have shown a extract from the plans below which shows the resonator/reflector originally fitted inside the body of the guitar to help project the guitar's sound forward so it could compete with other instruments.
Materials selected for this build: Back and sides: Santos Rosewood Soundboard: Sitka Spruce Neck: Mahogany. Bindings etc: to be decided
Full mock-up to follow...
