I've been working on some smaller (relatively) parts this week: Fretboard, building up the neck and squaring it up ready to cut slots for the truss rod and carbon stiffners. The MoP fret markers need tidying up a little before I can fit them into the rosewood fretboard. Now the weather is settling down a little I can restart work on the soundboard: Rosette first, then the internal bracing layout and bending/laminating the actual braces.

I like to trim the bottom of the pin at circa 45 degrees which pushes the ball end towards the bridge plate away from the pin.

Test fitting back-n-sides together. I need to shave a little more thickness from the ends of the back braces in a couple of places - getting there.

Back braces have now had an initial trim, the finger braces have been glued in place and the reinforcement pieces are all glued down. Some of the reinforcements were glued down along with the fingerbraces, the remainder were glued down once the finger brace bonds had cured. This whole assembly will be back under humidty control tonight.

It's a Go-Bar day today. Back braces are being applied and I'm playing with the layout of the rosewood reinforcement pieces. Once the main back brace glue has cured I can shape each brace. Then I can add the four short finger braces, and add the rosewood reinforcement pieces too. That's for tomorrow.

I've just sent 'Doc' a new mock-up for approval. It takes on some of the features of his J45 and will now have an Indian Rosewood fretboard and bridge instead of the earlier ebony. I hope you like...

Working off some Christmas pudding today sanding the edges of the sides to re-establish their profiles after the linings were fitted. Photos show a general view of the back face/edges of the body after sanding on the 15 foot radius dish. Photo two shows the profile of the tail block slimmed down to match the linings. Photo three shows a section of the sanded edge.

Final installment before Christmas folks: Sides have had their mahogany reinforcement strips added and the tail block has been shaped and a trial fit made. The neck block is currently covered in clamps and will be uncovered next time I'm in the workshop. Have a good Christmas all.

Just recieved two sets of full sized plans from F. Charle for Grande and Petite Bouche Maccaferri guitars. All in French so that's the first hurdle (never got on well in French classes at school!)... Hi Francis. Congratulations on getting these - these are great quality plans to work from! I have the English translation of the Petite Bouche model of these plans if you're interested? I'd be happy to send it to you if you'd like? All the best, Oska. Thanks Oska, As you say good drawing quality but easy enough to work out what the French were meaning to say 🤫. It’s the grande bouche I’m more interested in to start with and that I can see is a plywood construction for back and sides. I’ve already set aside a b&s set of santos rosewood for the build with a sitka soundboard. But that’s all for later.

Linings have now been fitted to the sides (ribs), left proud of the upper edges to allow for shaping to match the curved profiles of the soundboard and back plate surfaces. Side reinforcements will be added next followed by the two end blocks (neck and tail).

Today has seem me cutting thin strips of mahogany from an old cabinet shelf for the linings. These have been thickness' to 2mm, sprayed with water and hot bent to shape. Then placed against a former to retain their shape whilst they dry out. Once dry they will be sanded and glued together. Each lining will be made up of three laminations. The inside edge will be rounded over and when fitted to the side it will sit just proud so it can be sanded to either a 20 foot or 15 foot radius (front and back radii respectively). Sides have been cut down in height and then planed and sanded to either a 15 ft or 20 ft radius against a sanding dish.
