I bough an Aston Spirit yesterday and i'm blown away by how good it is so i thought i'd spread the word. I used it to record this. One mic It was just one mic about chest height about 1 foot away. This track has no effects on it whatsoever. Just straight into my Rubix 44 interface. I think it sounds amazing. Buy one!! Or two!!

I just checked them out and they do get good reviews - and I like the fact they're made in the UK. Did you compare it to anything else bellyshere? I see you're selling your NT1A - when I was looking for a LDC I narrowed it down to either the NT1A or the SE 2200 - I went for the SE in the end - but only because a nice one came up on ebay for a song. (So to speak.) Mind you, pretty much anything in the low-mid range "reasonable quality" bracket would do for my needs. Trouble with getting an excellent mic, of course is that everything else needs upgrading now.......

I agree with the upgrading bit. However, i’m not sure i can upgrade me.

They are good mics. Aston are one of a number of companies that have moved Mix technology on to the next level, particularly in reference to digital recording. The NT1 is a more than decent mic but of a different era.

I have a matched pair of the laser type that I bought last year at the Birmingham Guitar Show.
As good as my Neumann TLM 102 pair therefore excellent pro standard.

I have one of the Starlight laser ones as well. That’s fab on guitar alone. I’m selling that as i want another figure 8 mic for getting less bleed when singing and playing.

Excellent sound that and song Sorry if I'm being thick and I haven't looked into this but if you record just with one mic how do you get a stereo sound for CD quality? Or is it that you can't? P

P I’m not sure. It probably just makes it stereo in my DAW. It might not be stereo. Mono still comes out of both speakers.

P A reverb or delay or even eq which is Stereo will give you a Stereo result. Often on plugins you will see a mono > stereo option.

Sounds wonderful - I can see why you're so enthusiastic Shaun. Mark While Aston are doing fabulous things they are not the only company doing this and we now have a range of ‘affordable’ microphones the like of which couldn’t have been dreamed about ten years ago. One if the biggest factors seems to be the quality and consistency of Chinese capsules and components. Trade tariffs for US importers will see mic prices rising all of which could be good news for Aston and other U.K. companies such as Sontronics.

I wonder if anyone has used the Aston Spirit or Origin live as a single mic for guitar/vocals?
I played a gig on Thursday where I did that (with a studio projects mic so nothing expensive) and it was really nice - listening audience helped a lot of course but it's the sort of thing I could do at the odd gig... I ahve two RODE NT1a and I suppose I could start off trying one of those but I've been interested in the Aston mics for a little while as we use the SDC for acoustic review, and the single mic recording in the first post of this thread sounds great.

The Spirt is a very good mic as are all Astons. They are not unique in that sense but they are new designs aimed at the greater range of digital material. Lewit and Sontronics are also worth seeking out.
Playing around one condenser can be brilliant especially in a small room where you need a lift in volume. Your Rode will be fine for that as almost any decent large condenser will be. The only thing to watch for are monitors and feedback.
Kris Dreever and Reg Meuross are just two people doing this to great effect in small rooms. Dreever uses one of those Edwina things. Reg uses an old condenser he just had sitting around the house!

Just been working with him and his manager at his songwriting course for the week and played the opening slot at the end of week concert. It was really nice playing unplugged - we basically just bought the mic up to a sensible volume. I took out a little bit of low mids that was causing some muddiness and that was it, nice and simple, took about 2 minutes to soundcheck.
