Hi ladies & gents, The first time I bought Elixer Polyweb strings, they came in a purple packet, with the polyweb label on a blue background strip. These were brilliant in my opinion, and very slick, heavily coated with almost zero string noise. They were getting old so I bought a new set. The new set came in a slightly different packet, still purple, but the polyweb label also had 'original coating' text added, and was on a yellow background strip. Just put these on my guitar and they are totally different ! They are darker bronze, and have no coating on that I can tell. I thought to myself, maybe I had bought some fakes, but the exact same packet design is on sale an many major guitar outlets (such as musicroom). On the Elixer website, the only polyweb strings shown are the ones with the blue background label as my original strings were. So, I'm confused ! What's the deal, anyone know ? Attachment Deleted

As far as I know, there are two types, Polyweb and Nanoweb, with the former being the original coated design. Perhaps it' just a packaging re-brand to reinforce the difference between these two types?

Problem solved !
Took them back to MusicRoom, who told me the yellow strip pack was the old design, and their stock on the shelf was the blue strip pack. But they should have been exactly the same strings, and when I showed them the actual strings in the pack, compared to the old ones I took off my guitar, there was a huge difference. One eagle eyed member of staff spotted something ....... Attachment Deleted

On the front of each individual string package, it says polyweb....... But, on the rear, it says nanoweb ! Misprint and wrong strings put in the polyweb packaging !!!! Anyone want to buy some rare misprinted Elixir's ?

You should be able to see where the polyweb coating begins at the ball end. Could be you've got mispacked nanowebs or fakes if bought from eBay. Oops just seen your post

Oops just seen your post Bought two packs from Musicroom matey, hence why I was confused. Had I bought them from Ebay, I might have accepted they were fakes, but from a proper shop, that is what threw me. Anyway, now the problem is solved, and it is obvious why they looked & felt like completely different strings, because they were completely different strings lol !!!
Just put the set I bought today (in the blue strip label pack) and they are Polyweb as the original set was (and yes I did take them out of the pack to check, before I left Musicroom : once bitten & all that).
I just wonder how many other people have bought what they thought were supposed to be Polyweb strings, and thought 'hmmm these are hardly any different to normal Bronze 80/20's' ..... there must have been a large number made of that particular batch, but no results on google I can find of mis-packaged Elixir's ........ It can't just be me, surely ?

Just as further info on this thread : I emailed 'guitar tech' at 'strings direct' and had a reply from a nice chap there. This was his reply : Hey Nik,
Can you tell me whereabouts you got those, please? I can see there’s a spelling mistake on the front too, as well as recycling, Gore and Elixir logos all being wrong. These are 100% fake strings.
If you could let me know where these came from I will forward to Elixir.
I would not have spotted that, what is your opinion on this fellow acoustic soundboard members

Why contact Strings Direct? (Though I agree they may have supplied some useful info!)
If you bought them from Music Room, take it up with Music Room and get their opinion on whether fakes or not.(They may/may not be interested in the SD opinion, but will probably wish to know if they have been duped!) And then maybe discuss with them the possibility of alerting Elixir.

And then maybe discuss with them the possibility of alerting Elixir. Keith Hi Keith, I did take them straight back to Musicroom for their opinion, and they did not spot the fake packets at all, just the misprint on the back. But, I have been digging through my purchase history, and I did buy some of the same strings from both Musicroom, and also an Ebay seller called guitarlife1010 last year. I can not be sure which seller this exact pack came from, but I think it is more likely they came from the Ebay seller, as Musicroom would not likely sell fake strings. I contacted strings direct, because I wanted a totally impartial opinion on the product, and luckily the chap there obviously knew his stuff and spotted something nobody else did. As such, I would like to make it clear, now I have had time to go back through my purchase history, I think it is unlikely the strings came from Musicroom, and as such I apologise for making it seem like they were definitely the sellers of the strings. Lesson learned now, only buy strings from a proper shop, keep the receipts, and check them after purchase !

Most of the fakes seem to be in the older type packaging, and if you look at the windings at the ball end there is usually a difference especially on the unwound strings. If you used PayPal you can claim a refund up to 180 days
