If I understand the notation correctly in bar 30 I need to pull off from the 10th fret to the 9th to the 7th to the 5th. But by the time I reach the 5th everything is muted. It sounds OK if I pick each note but was wondering if it's my technique or I'm being asked to do something impossible!

Another impossible tab! No guitar to hand but I would pull off from 10 and 9 and then slide back to 5

Play it as written, but on each pull off, pull your finger not straight up but slightly downwards so you give the string an almost imperceptible little pluck. The string should then vibrate freely at each successive pull off and each note should end up with the same volume throughout. This does require you to use four fretting hand fingers.
If four fingers is too much I'd miss out the slur between 9 and 7 - there is an obvious break after the first pair of quavers so another break between second and third pairs won't sound too weird, and you keep the same character to the whole run, ie. 3 consecutive pull ofs (pulls off?) with similar breaks between them. This gives you time for a quick position shift if four finger usage is problematical.
As Andy suggests, a slide or two would play the notes, though it may not play the music with the (composer's or arranger's)intended expression. It could well sound perfectly fine, or even better than the music as written though. I'm all for a bit of interpretation!

And remember many tabs are not quite accurate. Or the artist is super human ;-)

I also find by the third pull off it's losing substance and tone. So interpretation is then needed. Whatever way sounds best to you as a player when you play it. If it doesn't suffer musically, then why not!

Hi OnechordtrickThe TAB doesn't suggest the most straightforward way to play the phrase. Play the final note of bar 30 open 1st string. Fingering to be simple is in the 7th position and leave all fingers on where possible: Bar 29: beat 5 finger 3 beat 6 finger 1 Bar 30: beat 1 finger 4 beat 2 finger 1 beat 3 finger 4 beat 4 finger 3 beat 5 finger 1 beat 6 open 1st string (pluck, not a slur/pull-off as written) Bar 31: beat 1 finger 1 Then shift hand to 2nd position for 3rd finger to play final beat Bar 32: beat 1, finger 1 Ultimately always use fingering to help the music flow and be smooth. Hope that helps. Jonny
