I'm slowly recovering after a horrendous journey 'dan saf'...
Had a great trip to partially move some stuff back to the UK and managed to fit in a visit to Dave's for a bit of flamenco filleting and for a meet-up with Keith for the first (and last) leg of the Kostal roadtrip. More on the flamenco in the relevant thread.
The A303 has some pretty decent pubs - the Malet Arms at Newton Tony had a great traditional feel to it, good beer, friendly staff and fantastic food, I'd recommend the Malet Burger.
Time flew as we tinkled on the Kostal and chatted about all things guitar. I think Keith liked it. I'm missing it already and I do hope Keith doesn't have a strong desire to perfect his percussive playing with metal picks over the next couple of months!

Brilliant... fantastic to fit EADGBE into a rhyming couplet, genius! Where's the tune then? I'm expecting you to retune from DADGAD to EADGBE mid song. Jonny Fankoo, Jonny (and Keith for pressing the thumbs up fingy) I'll add a couple more verses and see where I get to with recording it tomorrow ... probably nowhere No re-tuning will be involved, I got hammered when I tried that on a banjo song LOL The Dies Is Cast

Glad you got home safely Jonny. It was indeed a great meet up at a superb location. The pub was wonderful, and the four hours or so we spent there just flew by. Thanks Jonny for your friendship, and for being so trusting! The lady behind the bar, who sounded exactly like Katherine Parkinson (Jen in the IT Crowd, and Pauline in Doc Martin), was intrigued by our meeting but didn't succumb to our pleas that she sing something for us. She did tell us, though, that the window behind us in Jonny's picture came from a very old ship. Not a lot of people know that. Would also recommend the Malet burger, though the stilton/bacon topping was a bit powerful for it I thought - would have been fab as cheese on toast though. Some excellent beer (small quantities, obviously), though I've forgotten the name. The Kostal? It'll be a while before I can play anything all through on it - I keep having to stop and repeat bits and even just repeat one note just to revel in what is happening as it blossoms and (eventually) fades. The sound is very, very beautiful. I'm not sure I can do it justice really, but I'll have a bash. Speaking of which, the metal picks should be here in the post tomorrow. Should give me time to hammer a nice rusty nail into the heel so I can use a strap to play standing up. And maybe a soundport would be useful... where's my hammer... Keith

Tinkering around with this lovely guitar thisafto - here's the result - www.box.com/s/aqdvwxruuzcjiyfo246dNo effects, flat eq, just Zoom H2 as USB mic into Cakewalk to top and tail the track. The tune is still a work in progress, but the Kostal seemed to like it so far! Keith

Lovely composition Keith, sounds like the guitar comes with its own reverb so no need to add any effects! Not sure I understand the new roadtrip concept - is the idea we all just send a guitar to Keith?

Thanks Joe and Martin - the guitar does indeed sound very vibrant and reverby, and its responsiveness is amazing. The recording really doesn't capture the half of it, especially the enormous weight and presence behind even the most gently plucked notes. Really going to enjoy exploring this guitar. Keith

Lovely sound, with lots of overtones going on.
Are the strings newish? 12s or 13s?

Thanks Kym - newish strings - several days fairly intensive playing. John Pearse PB 12-53 - Jonny kindly put them onfor me immediately prior to our meeting last Tuesday. The initial brightness of new strings has now worn off.
Looking forward to trying some guess-whats on it soon.

That is a lovely piece Keith, shame about the guitar!
As you know my second guitar used to be a Lowden O25... nice warm sound, big bass, some similarities there. But what are your views on the differences Keith, if you happen to have one lying around?
One thing I haven't mentioned yet is that I took the Kostal to Dave's last weekend, we played it back-to-back with Dave's Big Boy. I am amazed that Dave came up with the Mod-D sound without being a Somogyi apprentice, actually I'm not amazed, Dave is a real problem solver and likes a challenge. To be honest, his Big Boy is a very close relative to the Kostal, it is a fantastic guitar.

Thanks Jonny. Well, my O25, does have a fairly complex and bold sound compared to many guitars, but the Kostal trumps it in every respect, from a players perspective as a solo instrument at least. There's just more of everything. Definitely goes up to 11 on all the knobs! I'll have to get Glyn to help me out with a comparison as a listener though. I doubt he'll mind! Keith

Love that tune, Keith ... not too fiddly and lets the guitar make the music by itself with minimal input from the player (which is something I still aspire to!)
Jonny, s/he/it sounds fantastic.
