On the news this morning that a new world record price for a guitar has been set with the sale of Kurt's 1959 Martin D18E for $6m.
Has the world gone completely mad!

Yes. Didn't you know ? At least it's a guitar. Imagine that it would have been his shoes.

It's insane. Value is ascribed to an object in terms of something called money, which itself is only notional in the end. I wonder if it's a good guitar.

I would have let him have my Larrivee for half that, and the pickup was factory fitted. Cobain put his in himself and you just know he bodged it.

The only issue is that the overall value for those Martins has likely raised because of that sale, I say that purely selfishly as I'd quite like a D-18E

You could buy nearly 4 guitars a day for a year at a budget of £3500 each for that price. Just Petty Cash for a billionaire though. Mark

After all it's not about the guitar. It's about who owned it, how and when he died. And I bet his shoes would go for at least half a million. maybe a million if it were the shoes he died in.

It is mad but what does bother me is it won’t get played again.

It is mad but what does bother me is it won’t get played again. Well quite. I'm reminded of a phrase that says something about buying things you don't need to impress people you don't know. I suppose in his case the "spending money you don't have" bit is redundant but even so it seems daft. It'll end up a relic, like a piece of the true cross. They'll probably invite selected megastars to play it once in a while and they will be expected to say how much better it is than every other guitar and everyone watching will cringe and die a little inside.
