I have some fantastic guitars which I think anyone would be glad to own. I can only play one at a time. I am nowhere near getting everything from these guitars that they have to offer and both of them sound fantastic to me. I don't really have the space to store more and most of the time I only play one of them. And yet I still want more - and not just in a general sense. There are specific guitars that I think about buying almost every day. Is this normal? Does it ever stop? Even just for a week? A month? It's like there's some stupid part of my brain that thinks I can buy my way to becoming a better guitar player and even though I KNOW this not to be true I still want more. I used to laugh at those tv programs about women with wardrobes full of clothes and shoes they never wear but I'm starting to think I might be the same. I don't want to be over dramatic but I have to ask - does it ever end? Is anyone out there in guitarland actually happy with the instruments they have - and if so how many do you have? Because I have a suspicion that there aren't many people who are content with just one or two guitars.

I love my guitars, but always want more guitars. I think this is an affliction we will battling with for the rest of our days.
You’re at the right place here, we will provide you with gentle support, whilst persuading you to buy another guitar.

As smooth and deadly as a stiletto between the ribs. I salute you.

The optimum number of guitars = (n+1) where n is the number you own at the moment.

The optimum number of guitars = (n+1) where n is the number you own at the moment. With the constraint than n<d where d is the critical number over which your partner will divorce/disown you. As an aside I realised yesterday that I have the same number of bikes as I do guitars/mandolins.

I think this is a problem that goes well beyond guitars. It is a question of marketing and availability, it's like asking why people overeat, it's the basis of our consumerist society. We are conditioned to believe that we need more, then more is made available but it doesn't satisfy us, it's not intended to.
If there was to be a major world recession for example, we would soon revert to one guitar and three meals a day, thank you very much.
In the interests of full disclosure, I must admit to having more guitars than I need, but I also worked most of my life in advertising so I know how the system works.

In answer to your final paragraph, back in the sixties it never crossed my mind to have more than one guitar, nowadays it does because of availability and affordability. i also have two cars, two bikes and until recently a boat, I don't think this is good it's just human nature to acquire things when they are available.

I think one is enough for me. All I have to do now is decide which one it is (which might not be as easy as it sounds).

I've got more than enough to cover the sounds I might want to make, but then I've lost the motivation to play anyway. I feel like a fraud hanging around this forum to be honest, but I like it round here so I'm not going.
