Hi Guys, hope that you are all managing to keep well and safe; thought that it was time start a new build thread. OK it’s not acoustic and it’s not a guitar, but hopefully you’ll find it interesting! And here’s a video to show you how I got this far. There is a lot of work in the construction of this inner core and you’ll appreciate the planning that went in to it. Of course, all of that work will never be seen, but hopefully the difference will be heard; I kinda like that! Take care, Gary

Great video, as always, Gary - really looking forward to following the rest of the build and to hearing the end result - excellent idea for an instrument!

Super video Gary...fantastic attention to detail as always and brilliant to have a sneaky look at your immaculate workshop! Very much looking forward to the next instalment! I wonder if the same concept might translate into a larger instrument...a mandocello maybe?! Very best wishes, Andrew and Jane

First rule of videos- tidy up workshop! Joking aside, I was always told that an untidy workshop was a busy workshop, but these days I find that a tidy workshop gives me a tidy mind and I can focus better on what I do. Yep, I can always go large!- built a couple of electric octave mandolins fairly recently, but the chambered body is a new thing. They're in my archive. Keep safe and take care. Cheers Gary

Thanks Gary, enjoyed that. Reinforcing Keith's comments, I find the pace you work at interesting. I presume that's the secret to a glue-up with no panic. Martin

I’ve been working on the first stages of the neck; preparing the sapele, laminating for both decoration and stability, spliced head joint, inserting carbon fibre, head overlay, shaping the head and volute, tuner holes. And here's a bit more........ Cheers Gary

Gary I enjoy watching your videos. I think it's because my increasingly developed 'faff' alert doesn't go on. At one point I was mulling over what the cost of the G clamps was during that initial lamination. thanks Martin

Gosh, not just wood that's been trimmed since the last video, Gary. Very brave; cold weather's coming y'know! Another enjoyable and informative video Gary - thank you for taking the time. Keith

You can never have too many clamps in my motto! Awhile ago I did a bit of an audit on my clamp collection and lately I’ve been buying a few more, so I estimate that I have around 220 clamps! Fortunately, these have built up over the years; some of those G-clamps must 40 odd years old. How anyone could start a workshop from scratch is beyond me! Cheers Gary

Keith Thank Keith, glad you’re liking the videos. This my first hair-cut this year! Because of this shielding business, we’ve not been out since March, so the time had come to buy some clippers and have a go! Cheers Gary

Another very informative and enjoyable video Gary...thank you! I can testify to the stability of your method on neck design..the mandocello you made for me in 2008 [!] seems completely stable . Also the French polish finish you applied has aged really well...possibly even more aesthetically pleasing now than when new. I too have bought a "lockdown"set of clippers but am not as brave as you to share the results publicly! Looking forward to the next episode.. Best wishes, Andrew

I’ve been working on the Koa back, to match the sides that you would have seen in an earlier post. One aspect of making the back, that I knew would be challenging was to cut out the access panel for the electrics. Why? Well, normally on my solid bodies, I route the control cavity and make up a cover from aluminium, brass or whatever. But on this one, as it has a thin back, I thought it be a nice idea to carefully cut-out the opening for the cavity and keep the “waste” to use as a matching cover. I first saw this idea on those amazing Alembic basses; it’s a feature they call it a “continuous wood backplate". However, lacking sophisticated machinery, I had to use my router, a template and template follower and a 1mm diameter cutter. Now, if you’ve drilled 1mm holes you know that the drill can bend or break quite easily, so it was with some trepidation that I put a 1mm cutter into a plunging router……….
Cheers Gary
