I've spent a few days recording some new Sobell guitars for Stefan for his website, two of them flat tops, a new thing for him - his soundboards usually have a radius. He has used his usual bracing and for the back, the usual radius.
Here's the first recording, a New World model flat top (Douglas Fir, Brazilian Rosewood). The piece is 'e' by Andrew York, tuning: DADF#BD, a nightmare to play due to really odd timing.
More details will be on his website soon.
Headphones recommended as a lot of the depth in the bass is lost otherwise.
The other recordings include some Blues and something vaguely Celtic... coming soon.

It sounds very different in the video. In real life?

It sounds very different in the video. In real life? Do you mean different to anything else? (What are you listening through?) The recording is as close as we could get it to the real thing. It passed the Stefan test! Thanks geddarby.

That made me properly listen. To me, what a balanced tone and sound - not too much and not too little. thanks Martin

Sounds great to me Jonny - and beautifully played. I especially love the bits where the treble strings chime together, eg after the very first three notes and lots of other places too. Lovely "in the room sound".
Keith
As an aside, do you find the piano interferes with sympathetic resonances when you play guitar so close to it?

Lovely "in the room sound". Keith As an aside, do you find the piano interferes with sympathetic resonances when you play guitar so close to it? Funny you mention the piano as Luigi and I had that conversation, then didn't close it. Thanks. A lot of time went into experimenting with the mic position as my remit was to reproduce as closely as possible the sound of the guitar; Stefan gave me free rein with the pieces and I chose what I thought would bring the best out from the specific guitar. Thanks malcolm and martinrowe. Jonny

It sounds very different in the video. In real life? I meant — what is the difference in sound to a normal Sobell?

I meant — what is the difference in sound to a normal Sobell? Ah yes. Stefan wrote this: This guitar has a Douglas Fir soundboard, brighter and punchier than my usual German spruce. Jonny has also recorded a piece on an otherwise identical German flat spruce topped guitar, which should show any difference rather better. The fact that the flat-top sound is still so clear indicates that there is more than just the domed top at work, but yes, there is a difference.I'll post the German Spruce later and share my thoughts. jonnymosco, who chose what choon to showcase? The tune you played certainly seemed (to my ears) to show off the range and tones of the guitar, I just wondered who chose it and why it was chosen above other pieces? Just interested in the thought process, really
