I know the guys at Brook put Elixir strings on their new guitars but I happen to hate the things. I use John Pearse on my Torridge (Sitka/mahogany)which seem to work well but I was wondering what other Brook owners prefer for strings. I have a new custom Brook Lyn cutaway (European/English walnut) coming around November and would like to come up with a starting point for trying new strings. I mostly use regular lights but might go to mediums on the Lyn since it's a short scale. Mostly standard tuning and maybe a little DADGAD or Orkney. Thoughts?

I've been something of a string chaser over the years and probably wasted more money on strings than I have on guitars. About 2 or 3 years ago, I discovered D'addario Nickel Bronze through a recommendation on this forum, really liked them and have stuck with them on my Brooks ever since. I've still tried a few alternatives but not found anything that works anywhere near as well for me. The sets I use are D'addario NB1252BT Nickel Bronze 12-52 balanced tensions. On my guitars they have a lovely fullness about them that I had never expected from nickel, they're very clear, feel nice and smooth and they last for ages. Quite well priced too. Jeff

I'm not sure if that has anything to do with the fact that I always use the 12-52 Balanced Tension set as opposed to the alternative 12-53 sets.

I think players just have to experiment with strings themselves to determine which they like the sound of so really these threads are just a "have you tried these?" sort of threads. I played D'addario EJ16 strings for many years in my Brooks until I thought if I can get some that last longer I won't have to change my slot head as often (currently 9 months or so ) so I tried Elixirs and I like them. I still try others - hated the Martin Retros for example. I have some EJ24 strings on my Torridge at the moment which are a DADGAD set and they are ok but the problem for me now with uncoated strings is what I perceive as excessive string noise, squeaks and the like so I will probably stick with Elixirs at least until my stock lasts.

I asked John Renbourne what strings he uses, he replied Free Ones!
