You won't be disappointed lads - seldom has banjo sounded as good as this! I agree that the banjo work sounds beautiful, although I'd point out that there are some equally excellent banjo players around if you are inclined that way, with the first on this list being particularly artful: Adam Hurt Mike Iversen Ken Perlman Howie Bursen

I thought it might be, but the headstock of Jason's banjos would usually have an "R" inlaid, so I guess that threw me.
I think Romero banjos are the very best you can get, and have gassed for one for a long time.

As one ignorant of the ways of the banjo, I was astounded by the range of options available and the scope for adding rapidly to the cost of the base model. Brian

Tried to use the Shout' function but it doesn't seem to work. Went round to IanLp59's the other day after Eric's memorial service. Ian is currently the custodian of this very fine banjo (though I didn't like to ask if I could see it, let alone play it). According to Ian it is simply stunning, both visually and aurally. I hope he will chip in here. Phil, I've been GAS'ing for one of Jason's banjos recently too. I also like the look of the open back Nechville that Eagle Music have on their website- slightly (bit only slightly) more reasonably priced than a Romero! Robbie

I have been enjoying this CD and I'm sure it will get plenty of plays Mrs PCT57 however does not like it, describing it as dirge and dour and reading the definitions of the words, quite a few of the tracks certainly fit the description. Having said that my opinion is that there is a place for music to which these words apply. I do like the CD and prefer to use the words moody and reflective. Anyone got any views on the above? Regards Phil

I'm fine with miserable - after all I'm a Richard Thompson fan! Now if Mrs PCT57 wants proper miserable she should listen to RT, thereby making MS seem very chipper!

And there is always Leonard Cohen - "music to slash your wrists by", according to my Domestic Line Manager.

Brian Mrs PCT actually likes Leonard Cohen ( I don't) and also June Tabor who likes bit of suffering and songs about LGW (love gone wrong). Turns out she just doesn't like Martins voice but likes Leonard's - 'go figure' as they say in USA Phil

The thread pre-dates both my arrival at this forum and my sudden interest in music of an acoustic hue. So I'll reactivate the thread as I have recently got the Vagrant Stanzas double CD edition. Wonderful musical experience - it took me a couple of listens to attune to Martin Simpsons voice, I'd mostly listened to his instrumental work before (though I'm in no position to impart any wisdom at all about singing). I do like the lack of any "backing" musicians on these recordings as I find that often detracts (for me) from the qualities of Martin Simpaons guitar work when I've heard clips form some of his other CDs. "Jackie and Murphy" has really etched itself on my brain - an absolutely stunning example of the craft of song-writing and very moving indeed - even more so after reading the background story to the song. I would maybe have liked more purely solo guitar pieces as he can often make the music from his guitar speak more effectively than words ... with "Jackie and Murphy" being a definite exception to that generalisation ... but that's just nit-picking. I was disappointed with the release, and haven't listened to it much after the first few days of receiving it.
I think I'm one of those consumers that independent musicians hate, who want my favourites to continually remake early albums, in this case, 'Bootleg USA' and 'Cool & Unusual'.
He is one of the best acoustic guitarists going around, but I've never found his voice to be all that attractive, and a couple of CDs worth with only a few instrumentals is too much for me.
I was turned off singer songwriters in general (and Leonard Cohen in particular) a long time ago, back in the seventies, when I lived in a share house with a guy who liked to finish off any evening around a flagon of red wine by dragging out his guitar and singing 'I lit a thin green candle' two or three times.
