The heavier the slide the better I've seen a really heavy looking dunlop brass slide. It looked really thick walled. There's also some nice ceramic ones. I could easily imagine that slides are something that could form a large collection!

I should put things in context regarding my choice of a 15 on the first string. I pretty much always play in various altered tunings with the 1st string tuned down to D and the 2nd string tuned up to C. The 2nd string is a 17, so its slightly increased tension also helps with slide playing. I agree with the heavy slide approach. I use a Wolfram tungsten carbide slide which is totally bonkers, both in terms of weight AND price. However, it is without question the best slide I've ever used.
Cheers,
Ian

I've heard of people trying a socket set, or a bit of brass pipe - heavy brass pipe that is.

Hi, I'm afraid that I know nthing of Fender Acoustics/resos whatever, but I do play slide, and have done for many years - not my main thing, but - nice to do. I slow play Dobro and Weissenborn.
I play a National Estralita, and put mediums on it - but I put a .017" (b string) on the first. I play mostly in D (D,A,D,F#,A,D).
I also have a ton of bottlenecks, some glass, mostly metal, but mostly I use a Dunlop brass 224 with a leather sleeve to make it snug. It is quite a heavy slide, and mass is what you need.
You don't need to press the strings with it, let the weight do that - you put the power into the notes with your picki8ng hand.
I have quite a stock of single strings. a 17 and the 17 tuned to D can also be fretted easily.

£320 for a slide As I said originally, totally bonkers, but these slides are peerless, simply quite superb. Cheers, Ian

I have the Wolfram Martin Simpson steel slide and it’s great. I agree the heavier the better . On my Weissenborn I have a Wolfram tone bar but nothing beats my Tribotone bar that I believe is metal covered withthermo plastic of some sort. For a change of flavour I also though have Diamond glass slides and a tonebar.
