Oh, yes, and this:
Where the vocals are treated as an instrument.

Yeah, First Aid Kit. They're great for the old harmonies. Nice one Brian.

I got one, I got one. Heard this the other day and was knocked over.
The sum is greater than the parts and a marvellous blend of instruments and voices - and recorded in sleepy Somerset as well.

Is it just me who reckons they get a big proportion of their harmony-chills when the harmony singing is a combination of male and female voices? (Assuming I'm still allowed to use the words male and female).

It was vocal harmony that first attracted me to the Beatles way back with Love Me Do. Then the Watersons and The Young Tradition once I became a folkie. And although PS was a mega talent (and The PS Songbook - simple vocal guitar - remains one of my desert Island Discs) even he would have to admit that AG brought a heck of lot to the table! And I love singing harmony - usually just instinctive as I go along if it's above the tune; below the tune I have to work out a bit more what to do. Keith Like Keith I love listening and singing harmony. I suppose being fed on a diet of the Andrews Sisters in the 50s (on 78s!) from my Mum made this inevitable. I also feel I have a good ear for simple natural harmony in 3rds above the melody line. And that doing a lower harmony is more challenging. But I was absolutely FASCINATED by this video that shows how the lower harmony works on Sound of Silence. Doing harmony above the melody line tends to be based on following the melody a lot (not strictly but much of the time). BUT THIS VIDEO SHOWS THAT A BOTTOM HARMONY CAN BE DONE WITH ALMOST NO VARIATION IN THE HARMONIC MELODY. It sticks on the same note a lot and the changes in pitch are few and slight. The video starts with him singing both lines. Then of course one person sings the melody. But, on the video, at around 1 minute it shows you Paul's lower harmony. Amazing, and to me, revealing. I ran a short workshop with some of my guitar group on harmony and used this as a prime example; particularly good for those who claim not to be able to sing as on this you barely need to!

One of my favorite JT songs. I loved the recording in the 70's with Carly but this is just as good. Thanks for posting.

My first band was when I was in the Navy stationed in Puerto Rico back in 1969. We were two guitars, drums, bass and keyboard with four of us singing harmony tutored by a gal (the one with the beehive hairdo sharing my mic) who had a bachelors degree in quire from Brigham Young University. Man did she teach us how to sing. The instrumentals were OK but it was the vocals that got us booked in clubs all over the island. Those four part harmonies took that band to a level that I've never experienced since. 1969 Fort Allen Naval Communication Station Enlisted Mens Club.
