I'm a huge fan of him. Aside from being a superb player, he seems to have an absolutely incredible collection of guitars. I think maybe colins is a fan of some of his guitars?

He has a channel with him playing Fahey, Kotke etc tunes and has a Patreon page where he provides tutorials for those tunes. He has a fine collection of pre War Martins, Larson Bros and so on. I've been meaning to subscribe once I have some time on my hands but never get around to doing so.

I really like that John Fahey piece. Nice to just hear the guitar, no singing.

I really like that John Fahey piece. Nice to just hear the guitar, no singing. Leo Kortke describes his own singing voice as resembling ‘a goose farting on a muggy day’. He does himself an injustice, of course - he can carry a choon as well as play one. My favourite album of his is ‘My Feet Are Smiling’ which I suspect alludes to how much his fingers must hurt 😄

Huge Kottke fan here - heard him when i was 5 and decided to play guitar. That was 50 years ago. My fave (and recommended albums are: Burnt Lips, My feet are smiling, 6 & 12 string guitar. these are just him and guitar. Burnt lips I regard as the most honest recording I've heard by anyone.
Recommended albums with studio musicians: Greenhouse, Mudlark, Ice Water (quite a country feel), That's What.
He's recorded a few albums with Mike Gordon from Phish which I enjoy. Their most recent "Noon" where they record a few of Kottke's ealier tunes. ("cradle to the Grave" & Eight Miles High" are standouts.)
If you want a good Kottke tone on a 12 string. Bozo Bell western (if you can find/afford one), Martin d12-28, Gibson B45-12 were the 12 strings he used up until the 80/90's when he had a deal with Taylor. His Taylors lack the tone of the formerly mentioned guitars IMHO. He detunes 2 1/2 - 3 steps low and gets a roar out of those guitars. I had a custom 10 string built to give me a cross between his Bozo bell western and a 10 string Martin he played. It is strung 14-68 and tuned 3 steps down. It doesn't have the octave d or g.
I also recommend latchlake acoustaglide slides which Kottke designed - they are great - I've been using them for years.

Surprised that Andrew Lardner has slipped through my awareness on the Toob. I'm usually up to speed with most of the Fahey / Kottke / Blind Blake pickers, just to keep my envy tank topped up. He's very good. I wonder if the Patreon thing is a tough call these days? So many places and subjects in which you can pay a monthly fee, but they all add up, especially these days. I've just cancelled a few as I have a ton of books and DVDs, and - more and more- CDs to self transcribe.
Going back to Kotkke, yes an amazing player, not at all a bad singer on the right tune, and a very funny guy. My first album, which I still have on vinyl, was Burnt Lips, and my most recent Greenhouse. There are still many more to get, but I suspect my days of being a completist are long gone. Simply not enough hours in the day.
A one minute snatched recording of Vaseline Machine Gun - on a cassette from the wireless - about forty years ago changed my entire direction. That, along with hearing Stefan Grossman and John Renbourn duetting on Spirit Levels on Alexis Korner's radio show one Sunday night, saw my take a left turn when all my friends were heading right and buying Iron Maiden and Saxon records!

In my humble opinion this is Leo Kottke at his best, giving a beautiful rendition of a fine song, with very tasteful slide on his twelve string.
