I won't lie, I don't recognise a number of the players listed so far and don't feel qualified to judge the best:) I do like a bit of Leo Kottke. No idea if he is technically anywhere near the best but I do love the music he makes. My brother was also a mad Chris Rea fan in his youth and I have seen him live a couple of times. Don't get me wrong I appreciate he is probably no where near the best, but I think he was/is very much underrated. He does make some pleasant and sometimes unique sounds with that slide. As a massive almost lifelong Kottke fan I'd love to say he was "the greatest" and he is astoundingly good however there are a few types of slide guitar, reso, acoustic, electric, lap steel, pedal, mohan vina.. so there's a fairly massive gene pool to choose from... My favourites through the years are: john Fahey, Leo Kottke, Ry Cooder, Harry Manx, Jerry Douglas, Bob Brozman (although I really can't listen to him anymore without feeling physically sick) but the one who i discovered relatively recently who I would say is worthy of a "greatest" title would be Sol Hoopii. There is very little audio and video of him out there but what there is is pretty outstanding. Jerry Douglas could very well be classed as "the greatest" as well IMHO.

I'm studioiusly avoiding making an answer as I do with frequently requests on my YouTube channel and other fora.
I maintain thet playing music isn't a competition, and I find stating "the best/greatest etc., is a pointless exercise.
If you like the playing of one person, fine, but views about "the best" is a purely personal judgement, if you have to judge.

The late and much missed Jo Ann Kelly, her brother Dave, the late Johnny Dickinson, Steve James, Adam Franklin …. the list goes on I "backed" Jo Ann once at the Twickenham Blues club.
She wanted to play slide and asked if anyone in the audience would play her 12 string. I was in the front row, I was in like flint!
Not a slide player but I met Arthur Crudup at the Half Moon. He was shown to a table and given a bottle of whisky and a glass anfd left alone.
My palDon saod "look at that poor old guy - let's go over and pay our respects (or some such).
We walked up and asked if we could sit with him. He misunderstood and got up to move. We had to say that we wantedvto sit WITH him. He was wary but sat down again. Don was a caring kinda guy who knew a lot about blues and Crudup's history (That's Alright Mama etc.0
Soon he was called to go on stage and I offered my hand. He looked deep into my euyes and said "You the first white boy ever called me Sir!".
It shook me.

You're right - certainly isn't a competition but it is also certainly not a "pointless exercise". I find it interesting to hear the "personal judgement" (ie opinion) of other folk - each of whom has proffered their thoughts without any implication that only they can be right. And most have actually named several players. As such I have quite a few players to check out now! Keith

For a more left-field offering, I submit King Benny Nawahi, in particular his record of 'Tickling The Strings', hot jazz on a lap-steel, astounding!

I wholeheartedly agree, music is not, and shouldn't be a competition (battle of the bands are a pet hate of mine), especially as there is no way to quantify what it is that the guy who plays three chords, but somehow sounds better than anyone else doing it, has over the technically skilled player that leaves you cold. That said, I find debates like this one interesting. I'm always keen to find out who people rate and, to whatever extent it can be articulated, why they rate them. Also if pointlessness was any sort of reason not to do something no one would ever make any music at all, or any other kind of art for that matter.

Impossible to say ‘the greatest of all time’ for me, I do know my favourite tune using slide/steel guitars is this great tune by Jim & Bob the genial Hawaiians. Their technical prowess was right up there the best

I am not a fan of "who is the best" There are no absolute values. However I am shocked that no one mentioned Jerry Douglas.

I got into slide after seeing Bob Brozman a couple of times. Now dead and some disturbing accusations about him then appeared (google it). His book on slide and rhythm is really good. But he’s not the greatest of all time as what he does (did) is so unique - he’d never sound like the other names mentioned cos it’s not what he did. Slide can sometimes get a bit much to listen too after a while so I prefer judicious use in a tune as opposed to all the time. So after a few songs from Brozman I have to turn it off. Lots of names to check out. Mike

I'm on a general forum where questions like Who is he greatest/best/fasted/ etc., I don't even bother to answer them now, as in fact as playing music is NOT a competitive sport there is no greatest/best/fastest etc.

Nobody is disagreeing with you - many have affirmed exactly that and still shared their likes, preferences and opinions, which is, after all, what the OP was after. It's supposed to be fun! Keith
