Me and a friend went down to the Lancashire Guitar Show, this morning. Very hot and very sunny day but the civic hall was nice
and cool. Although quite a bit smaller than the Northern Guitar Show at Haydock, earlier in the year, there was a good turn out
of both traders and punters. There was also a good range of prices, from half a ton to thousands, which was nice to see. I
was on the lookout for another guitar but didn't have a very large wad with me. Anyway, a good time was had by both of us.
We looked around the entire show, at least twice, had a drink and watched Carrie Martin perform on her collection of Vintage
(brand) acoustics and made some purchases. My friend bought records/CDs and I spotted a rather nice Firebird type guitar
on the stall of MD Guitars (Martin Dixon). Made by Martin in the Stafford area, these guitars are extremely well priced. This is
achieved I think, by use of decent, mid priced hardware and matte/satin finishes, that give the guitar a vintage look. The model
that took my fancy, was a Firebird style, that kind of looks like a non-reverse Firebird, re-reversed. If that make sense. Well
the pics put it better. It has 3 P90 pickups and a 5-way selector switch. I talked with Martin for quite a while but didn't get
around to asking what woods were used. Going by weight, feel and look, I'd say mahogany body and neck, with a rosewood
fingerboard. I already liked how it looked but was also impressed by the feel of the neck and the solid build quality. The P90s
sounded how IMO, they should. Thick single coils, with both sparkle and growl. I really liked it but even at it's "ex-demo",
price, it was a tad more than I wanted to pay. So I walked around for a bit more and told my mate about the guitar and my
measly cash situation. He suggested making a cheeky offer, as that was all I had but at least it was in cash. So I asked if they'd
take my mini wad and they said yes. Result! They even threw in a gigbag and straplocks. Double chuffed. Now it's at home
with me and I have a single-coil, an HB and P90 guitar. The MD sounds realy sweet clean and mildly crunchy. I even put it
through my metal setup and it sounded pretty mean.
