To use a technical term, this is absolutely “gobsmacking”! The skilfulness and artistry are astonishing.

There has been more progress on the mandolin, but I've not yet got the piccies. I did manage to visit Jill at her workshop last weekend, and the mandolin is actually near completion! She was about to apply the 'sunburst' and then the French polishing process takes place, so hopefully delivery should be 6-8 weeks or so. Anyway, here's a photo of Jill with the mandolin and a weird looking bloke who happened by

Well, there has been a wee hiccup in terms of progress photos, so there are a few missing for construction, but I did just get a hold of some pics of the mandolin with stain and French polish applied. It is currently undergoing the finishing/curing process and should be ready in around 4 weeks time when the hardware (tailpiece/tuners) is fitted.

Good stuff! What is the purpose of all the little holes drilled into the back?

Good stuff! What is the purpose of all the little holes drilled into the back? They're a depth guide for the initial "hogging out" of material. You'll notice that they're deepest at the middle & shallower at the edges. You drill them such that you can safely gouge out the Maple to the depth of the bottom of the drill holes, knowing that you haven't gone too deep & can then refine the plate thickness more carefully from then on.

Thanks, that makes sense. I'd love a decent mandolin. Or at least one that's playable...
