I have a Shubb and it's fine and dandy, but I like to have a spare to lend out at lessons and open mics, and I seem to have been through a few lately. Can anyone point me at a supply of cheap (cheaper the better, but I'm anticipating around £5-£7) capos, that are idiot proof*, and actually functional?
*The Shubb is not idiot proof, it thoroughly confuses those who have not encountered one before. This may be why it has not been "borrowed" like all my others.

I always kept a few of the Dunlop style capos handy, in fact the lever type Dunlop was my go too capo as it never got in the way like other types used to, cheap as chips too and idiot proof. Colin

According to amazon I bought one of those in 2015. From what I remember I thought it was great, right up until it broke in two a couple of months into my ownership, which makes me wary of getting another.

Colin I was just pricing these up on Amazon & Stagg make an almost identical lever type one that's only £3.50. I'm starting to feel like I may need to get a few of these and make a review video to compare!

Thanks for the reviews, enjoyed Pete. I think Bill Russell first bred the famous dog breed with his uncle Jack.

I have followed through on my threat: Hi Pete, et all, I have to say that I was appalled to see that those nasty (and often painful) elastic capos and the nasty Dunlop IIc capos with little bit of cat collar material around the back are still being sold to unsuspecting audiences, just like they were in the '60s and '70s.
I did a search for capos on Ebay, and found a plethora (lovely word that) of copies of outdated designs, I see that for the more affluent there is a flurry of expensive Stirrup designs all aimed at the Elliot-Mckinney (£150) styles audience. Don't worry -they refuse to sell to the UK!
I prefer a simple light long lived capo that takes up very little room in my pick box and never fails.
That is the simple basic Shubb C1 or C1b. I think I got my first one in the 1970s or '80s, and it still works fine and never had to replace the rubber or delrin caps on any - I have one for every flat top.
It occurs to me that your could have bought a Shubb C1 for the same amount as you spent on those four cheap capos.
Here's me using one and rattling on about how I use 'em :

I do have a Shubb - not sure which model, but it has a little wheel, which I prefer to the rubber thing that always went missing - and it's my main one for personal use, but I like to have a couple of extras to lend out when I'm teaching or emceeing at an open mic night. For some reason the lever/screw Shubb mechanism seems to confuse people.

As a complementary piece, this video has just dropped from Tom Sands:

My rubber bands saved me a few times, and they work so well, indeed!!!

I watched that video by Tom Sands (who he? ..ed) Shame he doesn't understand the simple but effective mechanics of the infinitely adjustable Shubb - all the rest were dependent on some spring or other to apply pressure.
He "gives" the least marks to the most useable of a very poor bunch and some cheaper copied. No-one who knows acoustics are going to rely on stuff like that.

According to his YouTube bio he's "regarded as one of the greatest luthiers of our time". I don't profess to be any great authority on hand built guitars, but I must admit I hadn't heard of him.
