Got to 'In the beginning' P27 to find two of the longitudinal exercises (3rd and 6th) impossible. If that's the beginning, the book is doomed to failure (or should I say I am!). I cannot see any amount of practice deforming me sufficiently to make those stretches.... As with all stretching exercises, including for athletes, Yoga... a sudden stretch too far is detrimental and will cause damage. It must be tiny stretches increased over a long period of time. Those stretches are possible with the guitar and body in the right position and only once smaller stretches are comfortable. I suggest replacing the 12th fret with the 11th in bar 2 and 11th fret with 10th fret in bar 4 for a few weeks until it is comfortable, then play the exercise as written. roche exercise by Jonathan Moss, on Flickr I would also supplement this exercise with other exercises that are more achievable, like this one: Hopefully this is still on topic as it suggests an approach to practising. Good luck. Jonny

Thanks for the suggestions guys! Been away from guitar all summer (summer, what summer?) But had a play today (La Montavava from book 2) and after a few goes I got it down, and noticed that I wasn't looking at the strings so much!

Can anyone confirm that the Eric Roche guitar bible has ringbound binding? I've come across a few potentially good books which have been let down by having normal book binding- useless on a music stand!

I came across this the other day. If you haven't heard him, Paul Kowert is a bit good.
The whole site is pretty interesting:

Well, they are for stopping your clothes from blowing away, but they also work pretty effectively for keeping music books open on a stand.

I have a beginner clarinet book and its impossible to get it to open flat. Absolutely useless. Pegs wouldn't cut it. One would need industrial strength clamps!

I use bulldog clips. Hasn't helped my clarinet playing though.

To be honest I've pretty much given up on clarinet. I'm never gonna be a player, I just can't do the whole register key thing and even basic playing always feels like I'm blowing down a garden hose! Guitar is much easier on me...
