I already have some very nice guitars, including a Yamaha LJ16 which I love and which always impresses otherwise knowledgeable folk as to just how good Oriental instruments can be. I have a hankering for a smaller OM or 000 size cutaway guitar of similar quality and affordability. Any suggestions? Thanks, Robin.

Not sure what an LJ 16 costs? How much are you prepared to spend?

If can find one, a Yamaha AC4K would be a nice buy. It's around the same size as the LS16 but solid Koa and with a cutaway and a quality on board pickup system. The neck and nut width will be similar to your LJ so moving from one to the should be painless (the AC may feel a little smaller because the body will be a bit shorter and I would expect that to make it more comfortable and easier to play). They're very nice guitars with a gorgeous tone and high build quality but I don't think Yamaha are making them anymore and people who have them tend to hang on to them. Keep an eye out or set up an alert on ebay, reverb, gumtree or wherever. The Yamaha FS3 is also meant to be a nice guitar and is probably around the same price as a new LJ16. I've never played one (I have an AC4k and can vouch for its quality).

Oriental guitars can be excellent. I suggest you check out Eastman guitars (made in China) as the build quaity is very good. They have a wide range of models and pricing to suit every pocket, so you may find something to suit you. One of the biggest suppliers in the UK is Richards Guitars in Stratford.
One of my giggong guitars is an Eastman E10OM

There is a Yamaha FS5 available on ebay for £980. Seller says it was bought in February, in mint condition, hardly played, as new. It's collection only so if you're in/near London it might be of interest.
Best price I've seen for a new one is £1,120.
For the avoidance of doubt it is not mine, I've never seen it or played it and I don't know the seller. I just saw it on ebay earlier today.

Well folks, thanks for the replies which have given me lots to think about. I had been wondering about Eastman and whether one of their products might "fit the bill", with that in mind, I think I'd best make a trip to Stratford, which is only about 35 miles away and see what Richard's guitars have to tempt me. After that it might be an Eastman, or another smaller Yam, or----------------------I might just be able to persuade Phil the Luthier over in France to build me another of his wonderful instruments. That LJ16 was a bargain, and just keeps getting better, thanks Robbie!
And again, thank you all for your suggestions,
Robin.

If you can find one, a Yamaha CSF100K is a lovely, all Koa guitar.

If you can find one, a Yamaha CSF100K is a lovely, all Koa guitar. Lovely guitar grayn but it looks like they only made 25 and that was in 2003 . Might be a bit of a task finding one of those. Might be a bit pricey too!!
In defence of my AC4K post, they made an awful lot of those, most of them ended up in the UK and they only stopped making them a few years ago. (although I agree that making my first suggestion a guitar that is no longer available was not the wisest).

My mistake. Apparently they made 100, kept 25 in Japan and shipped the other 75 to the rest of the world.
Happy Hunting!!!

As we seem to be on a Yamaha theme here, I was searching for Yamaha LS26 videos the other day, thinking it would be rather lovely to own one of these smaller bodied Japanese made models, and I came across this video. It is utterly glorious:

Folks, I'm still here, still pondering, still wanting a "Smaller bodied" guitar but have now further complicated the search in as much as I'd like it to be a 12 Fret, cutaway model. I have a lovely little S&P Parlour 12 Fretter, it's a delight to play especially in a sort of intuitive manner, just a bit lacking in bass, presence and sustain. One fine day I might find what I'm looking for, provided I live long enough! Meanwhile I'll continue to enjjoy what I'm lucky enough to already own. Despite that, I'm in no rush. Robin.

I keep eyeing this up on eBay. It ticks all your boxes (12 fret, cutaway etc). If you buy it then i won't have to agonise about whether or not to buy yet another guitar. It's reputedly a great guitar. I have three other similar Recording Kings from this discontinued range from about 10 years ago - slightly different shapes/sizes but all of them 12-fret riffs on a similar design - and they are all fabulous. Martin/Collings style guitars for a fraction of the cost.

I’m considering selling my cutaway Brook Lyn but it’s not a cheap guitar due to lots of upgrades to the standard model. PM me if you want more details. Phil

There’s a great looking Collings 000-2H cutaway at a bargain price on reverb, it has a German top as well. If I didn’t own a 000-2H already I’d be sorely tempted. This guitar would be about £7000-7500 new.

Thanks for the suggestions, still here, still thinking, but doubt that I could afford (or justify) either the Collings or Brook, and the Recording King is so very similar to my excellent Simon and Patrick Parlour. hmm. I'll try to persuade Phil-the-Luthier to build me a 12 fret version of the truly superb 14 fretter of his that I already possess. Blessings, Robin.
