It is usually very simple to get the balls off your old strings if the wire loop is generous enough just by twisting them out with fine pliers. If that doesn't work then just snip the wire loop before it reaches the ball. I have done so on many occasions to convert loop end strings to ball ended ones. In fact at one stage, like Paul, I had a bag of ball ends in my man-drawer.
If you bend your ball ends when restringing (as earlier in thread), the wear on the bridge plate is reduced (and shared with the pin).
