Wasn't sure how to title this subject, but suffice to say am really pleased with myself. You maybe aware that I am a relatively new returnee to the world of guitars and my skills although limited are way beyond what was achieved way back through the ages before I put the guitar down. This morning I was watching a video comparing modern song writing compared to that of bands in the past, the Beatles being the main topic of discussion. While watching the video I decided that I would start playing the notes of various keys using the major and minor chords I.e. 1sr major, chords 2 and 3 minor, chords 4 and 5 major, chord 6 minor and chord 7 diminished, as an experiment to check my chord knowledge. I started with C major scale and soon recognised something that was falling out of my guitar, so I played with it a bit and then realised it was From a deadbeat to an older greaser by Jethro Tull! Once I was satisfied that I thought I had all the relevant chords and in the right order, I checked some tabs on line and lo and behold I was spot on! Never done this before and I feel this is a real achievement. It seems to me that playing the guitar for me is almost a revelation everyday!

Well done, Alan. Using those same chords was a revelation to me for songwriting, too. Instead of just the usual one, four, and five I suddenly had all these other chords that would fit just as well. Like you, I started to hear other songs as I fooled with the various permutations, as well. Good ear work, too. Well done!
